Job summary

Mann Eye Institute in Humble, TX is seeking a Medical Assistant to support nursing staff in the Surgery Center. You will assist with admissions, procedures, chart prep, and post-operative care, while maintaining patient confidentiality and coordinating with teams.

Responsibilities include assisting with recovery, handling supplies, prep work, vitals, and OR turnover, with emphasis on accurate documentation and compassionate patient interaction.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Nursing Assistant Certification preferred.
  • Basic life support (BLS) certified or eligible is required.
  • Ability to follow policies and maintain patient confidentiality per HIPAA.

Responsibilities

  • Assist recovery and/or preop nurses during surgery as scheduled.
  • Receive and unload supply shipments with the supply coordinator.
  • Prepare surgery charts with front desk staff; assist patients from OR to recovery.
  • Transport patients from recovery to their vehicles as needed.
  • Scan and batch surgery forms by end of day; fax co-managed charts.
  • Check vitals in preoperative and postoperative units; restock supplies.
  • Assist with OR turnover and follow-up calls for surgical patients.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and a positive relationship with staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; support nursing and clinical teams.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Medical Assistant FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Department: Surgery Center Reports To: Director of Nursing

Job Summary:

Serves as support personnel following regulations for the practice of Nursing Assistants including assisting with patient admissions, patient procedures, care and maintenance of procedural instrumentation, discharging patients, chart preparation, medical records, assisting providers and other personnel as needed, and other collateral duties.

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Assist recovery and/or preop nurses as scheduled during surgery
  2. Works with supply coordinator to receive and unload supply shipments
  3. Assist front desk coordinator as needed in prepping surgery charts
  4. Assist patients from OR to recovery
  5. Assist with transporting patients from recovery to their vehicle as needed
  6. Scans and batches surgery forms by end of the day
  7. Fax co-managed patients’ charts
  8. Assist in checking vitals in preoperative and post-operative units
  9. Re-stock supplies as needed (e.g. linens, gauze)
  10. Assist with OR turnover
  11. Assist with follow-up calls for surgical patients
  12. Assist with terminal cleaning of surgery units
  13. Assist with YAG, SLT, YAG PI lasers
  14. Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and practice guidelines
  15. Maintain a positive working relationship with staff
  16. Other duties as assigned
Essential Skills and Abilities:
  1. Follows medical record policies and procedures.

  4. Identifies and reports critical patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
  5. Collaborates with team members to coordinate patient care.

  8. Utilizes translation services when necessary.
  9. Communicates effectively with diverse patients, families, and colleagues.
  10. Embraces new ideas and adapts to change.
  11. Engages in the quality improvement process.
  12. Supports performance improvement initiatives.
  13. Reports suspected abuse per protocol.
Education and Experience:

1. High School diploma or GED.

2 .Completion of the Nursing Assistant Certification Program is a plus.

3. Current BLS.

Physical Abilities:
  1. Ability to stand/ sit for prolonged periods while working.
  2. Ability to travel to various locations
  3. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for event setup and other administrative tasks.
  4. Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as typing and using a computer mouse.
Work Environment:

The position is based in an office and clinical setting, with some travel required for research-related activities.
