Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations and treatments by escorting them to exam rooms, obtaining vital signs, documenting chief complaints, completing medication reconciliation, and updating medical histories.
  • Perform pre-visit planning by reviewing patient records, test results, consult reports, and correspondence to identify needed services and preventive care opportunities.
  • Document patient information, pain assessments, questionnaires, and clinical observations within the EMR.
  • Maintain efficient patient flow and communicate care reminders to providers through the EMR.
  • Review and assist with preventative care, chronic disease management, and health maintenance services according to established protocols.
  • Coordinate follow-up care, referrals, specialty consultations, and laboratory testing.
  • Assist providers during examinations and procedures while maintaining aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
  • Administer vaccines and place PPD tests according to practice protocols.
  • Educate patients regarding tests, procedures, care coordination, and appropriate healthcare utilization.

Job description

Position Summary Under the direction of the Ambulatory Clinical Manager, Practice Manager, and supervising Licensed Independent Practitioner, the Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support in an ambulatory care setting. This role is responsible for patient intake, vital signs collection, care coordination, patient education, and clinical support services for patients across all age groups, including pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. The Medical Assistant promotes patient- and family-centered care while supporting Brown University Health's mission, vision, values, and commitment to excellence. Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
  • Prepare patients for examinations and treatments by escorting them to exam rooms, obtaining vital signs, documenting chief complaints, completing medication reconciliation, and updating medical histories.
  • Perform pre-visit planning by reviewing patient records, test results, consult reports, and correspondence to identify needed services and preventive care opportunities.
  • Document patient information, pain assessments, questionnaires, and clinical observations within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Maintain efficient patient flow and communicate care reminders to providers through the EMR.
  • Review and assist with preventative care, chronic disease management, and health maintenance services according to established protocols.
Diagnostic Testing & Procedures
  • Perform point-of-care testing and clinical procedures, including EKGs, blood pressure measurements, pulse oximetry, hemoglobin A1C testing, glucose testing, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, rapid strep testing, and other approved screenings.
  • Assist providers during examinations and procedures while maintaining aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
  • Administer vaccines and place PPD tests according to practice protocols.
Care Coordination
  • Coordinate follow-up care, referrals, specialty consultations, and laboratory testing.
  • Ensure specimens are accurately labeled, documented, and submitted for processing.
  • Track laboratory results, consult reports, referrals, and provider orders to ensure timely completion and documentation.
  • Conduct patient outreach for reminders related to appointments, laboratory work, referrals, and preventive services.
  • Report abnormal test results promptly to the appropriate provider or nurse.
Patient Education & Customer Service
  • Educate patients regarding tests, procedures, care coordination, and appropriate healthcare utilization.
  • Explain preparation requirements for procedures and diagnostic testing.
  • Promote a positive patient experience through exceptional customer service and professional communication.
Administrative Support
  • Schedule appointments, diagnostic testing, and follow-up visits.
  • Verify patient demographic, insurance, and registration information.
  • Obtain prior authorizations and assist with pharmacy benefit verification.
  • Support general office operations, including correspondence, patient reminders, and administrative tasks.
Inventory & Equipment Management
  • Maintain examination rooms and clinical equipment.
  • Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed.
  • Inspect medications and supplies for expiration dates and report expired items promptly.
  • Report malfunctioning or missing equipment to management.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
  • Adhere to all quality assurance, safety, infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and regulatory standards.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
  • Support the principles of patient-centered care and contribute positively to team-based care initiatives.
  • Participate in workflow improvements, organizational changes, and ongoing professional development activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Certification
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Graduate of a formal Medical Assistant training program (nine months or longer).
Knowledge & Skills
  • Working knowledge of clinical policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficiency with computers, scanners, electronic medical records (EMR), and scheduling systems.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide culturally competent care to patients throughout the lifespan.
Experience
  • Minimum of three years of Medical Assistant experience in a comparable ambulatory setting within the past five years; OR Recent graduate of a formal Medical Assistant training program (nine months or longer) completed within the past two to three years.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and appointment scheduling systems preferred.

Pay Range: $18.13-$29.90
