The Wellness Center at University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is hiring a Medical Assistant to join a team delivering patient intake, clinical support, immunization, and administrative services. The role requires patient‑centered care, adherence to protocols, and strong collaboration with providers, students, and campus partners.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current BLS certification is required.
  • Current registration or certification as a Medical Assistant, or the ability to obtain the required certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Experience performing or the ability to learn and apply medical assisting functions, including patient intake, clinical procedures, specimen collection, injections, immunizations, and CLIA waived laboratory testing is required.
  • Experience supporting clinical services in an ambulatory, outpatient, student health, or similar health care setting is highly desirable.

Salary Range

$31,589.00 - $36,176 annually at 80% time. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications. This position is Non‑Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.

Summary

The Wellness Center provides health care services and support to the UCCS student community. The Medical Assistant supports the delivery of safe, efficient, and patient‑centered clinical services by performing patient intake, clinical support, laboratory, immunization, and administrative functions. This position works closely with medical providers, students, patients, and campus partners to facilitate timely care, follow‑up, and compliance with health requirements. The Medical Assistant uses established clinical protocols, exercises judgment when triaging patient needs, and maintains accurate and confidential patient information and clinical records. The position also supports daily clinic operations, inventory management, infection control, and emergency response activities.

Essential Functions
(35%) Patient Care, Intake, and Clinical Support
  • Check in patients and complete required patient intake activities prior to medical provider evaluation.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, health information, and other information required to support patient care, consistent with established clinic procedures.
  • Triage acute care, routine care, and walk‑in requests using established protocols and elevate concerns to the appropriate medical provider when indicated.
  • Assist medical providers with examinations, procedures, and other clinical activities within the scope of the position and established protocols.
  • Respond to medical emergencies occurring in the clinic by providing appropriate assistance and support to medical providers until emergency medical personnel arrive.
  • Communicate with patients regarding follow‑up examinations, appointments, and other health care needs as directed by the medical provider.
  • Maintain a professional, patient‑centered approach when interacting with students and other patients, including individuals seeking urgent or sensitive health care services.
(25%) Laboratory, Immunization, and Clinical Testing
  • Collect, label, process, and obtain appropriate laboratory specimens in accordance with clinic procedures and applicable safety requirements.
  • Perform in‑house CLIA‑waived laboratory testing according to established procedures and quality‑control requirements.
  • Monitor laboratory results and notify medical providers when results are received.
  • Track abnormal laboratory results and assist providers with patient follow‑up and communication.
  • Notify patients of normal laboratory and radiographic results at the direction of the medical provider.
  • Administer immunizations and injections in accordance with clinic protocols, provider orders, and applicable requirements.
  • Support student compliance with MMR, meningitis, and other applicable immunization or health requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of immunizations, laboratory testing, and related clinical services.
(20%) Clinic Operations, Safety, and Infection Control
  • Maintain adequate medical and clinical supplies by monitoring inventory levels, identifying supply needs, and assisting with supply orders.
  • Stock examination rooms on a routine and as‑needed basis to ensure supplies are available for scheduled and unscheduled patient care.
  • Disinfect examination rooms and clinical work areas according to established infection‑control procedures.
  • Handle and dispose of biohazardous waste in accordance with applicable safety requirements and clinic procedures.
  • Identify operational or supply issues that may affect patient care and communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor or provider.
  • Support efficient clinic operations by maintaining organized clinical areas and ensuring equipment and supplies are prepared for patient care.
(15%) Patient Communication and Administrative Support
  • Answer telephone calls and assess patient needs to determine the appropriate scheduling or clinical response within established protocols.
  • Schedule appointments based on patient needs and provider availability.
  • Triage walk‑in appointment requests and direct patients to the appropriate care or scheduling resource.
  • Communicate with patients regarding laboratory results, follow‑up needs, appointments, immunization requirements, and other health care matters as directed.
  • Assist with front desk operations and other administrative activities as needed to maintain efficient daily clinic operations.
  • Coordinate with campus departments and community agencies, as appropriate, to support patient care and health‑related services.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and handle health information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and university policies.
(5%) Documentation, Coordination, and Other Duties
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to patient care, laboratory testing, immunizations, inventory, and other assigned clinical activities.
  • Use independent judgment within established procedures to prioritize competing patient care and clinic operational needs.
  • Collaborate with medical providers and Wellness Center staff to identify and address patient care and operational needs.
  • Participate in required training and maintain knowledge of applicable clinical procedures, university policies, safety requirements, and health care protocols.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the mission and operational needs of the Wellness Center.
