Purpose:
Provide leadership under the direction of Library Media Services to ensure all students are effective users of ideas and information. Supervise and manage the school library/media center and programs. Offer services and resources that help students develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems (21st-century skills). Engage learners through print and digital resources to access, create, and share content, and collaborate as global citizens. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to fully integrate the library/media center into instructional programs. Must have proficiency in engaging learners with various instructional strategies.
Major Responsibilities:
- Use the TEK’s/SE’s and library curriculum products to provide group instruction and individual guidance to students in resource location, research techniques, and self-managed learning.
- Develop strategic plans to meet the standards and guidelines for Texas School Library Programs.
- Participate as an educational leader and partner in curriculum development at campus and district levels, consulting with teachers on material use and scheduling.
- Model and promote collaborative planning, cooperative teaching, and direct instruction based on learners’ needs and curriculum standards.
- Promote ethical use of resources and instruct students in locating, gathering, synthesizing, and evaluating relevant information.
- Provide ongoing learning opportunities for students and staff, fostering active participation and engagement, especially in technology and information literacy.
- Supervise Media Assistants, student aides, and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
- Offer instructional access to resources through flexible scheduling, creating a conducive learning environment.
- Maintain a balanced, current, and relevant collection of print and digital resources in line with policies.
- Manage library operations including budgeting, purchasing, scheduling, and reporting.
- Encourage high circulation and resource sharing beyond the campus.
- Support academic rigor by teaching research and information processing skills, preparing students for college, work, and lifelong learning.
- Collaborate with the community and other libraries for mutual benefit.
- Enforce discipline policies and support students’ rights to materials.
- Interact positively with students to promote reading and a love of learning in a safe environment.
- Stay informed about information culture and incorporate it into the program.
- Communicate effectively in various forms.
- Comply with laws, regulations, and policies related to library services.
- Continuously evaluate and improve the library/media center program.
- Engage in professional growth and participate in associations and publications.
- Perform administrative duties to keep the library functional and organized.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements for federally funded positions.
- Maintain punctuality and regular attendance at the worksite.
Work Environment:
The environment is typically moderate noise. Travel across district campuses is required. Remote work is not an option due to the need for regular attendance and on-site duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related field with valid Texas Library certification; Master’s preferred.
- At least two years as a qualified teacher; bilingual skills are a plus.
- Knowledge of library and information science.
- Ability to instruct and manage students effectively.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility to adapt to a changing environment.
- Commitment to staying current in the profession.
Salary is based on the Board-approved instructional salary schedule.
