Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical, bacteriological, serological, or microscopic tests across multiple lab sections.
  • Monitor quality control procedures and report results for accuracy.
  • Calibrate, standardize and maintain equipment; troubleshoot instrument malfunctions.
  • Prepare reagents, standards, and controls per procedures.
  • Validate and report test results; assist staff in teaching laboratory procedures.
  • Operate a range of instrumentation including flow cytometry and optical/photometric devices.
  • Review literature for new testing techniques; ensure safe handling of hazardous materials.
  • Assist with supply ordering and department-specific duties as required.

Job description

Shift: NIGHTS - Monday - Thursday, 8:30pm - 7am

Department: University Hospital, Blood Bank

Compensation:

  • Base Pay Range: $30.66 - $50.01 per hour, based on experience.
  • Choose Between Sign-Bonus - OR - Retention Rewards
  • Sign-On Bonus: $10,000
  • Retention Rewards: Up to $15,000
  • Relocation Support: Additional $5,000 if moving from over 50 miles away
  • Retention Reward (Option 1): $2,000 per year for up to 5 years, totaling $10,000
  • Student Loan Repayment (Option 2): $2,000 per year toward student loans, up to 5 years, totaling $10,000
  • Note: Details will be provided during the HR interview. Policy language is available upon request.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Perform chemical, bacteriological, serological, or microscopic laboratory test procedures on specimens in one or more laboratory sections.

Perform and monitor quality control procedures and report results to ensure consistency and accuracy.

Calibrate, standardize, and maintain equipment following established procedures. Perform troubleshooting techniques on instruments. Recognize instrument malfunctions and abnormal test results and take corrective action.

Prepare reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.

Validate, review and report results of tests performed.

May assist higher-level technical staff with the instruction and teaching of laboratory procedures and tests.

Perform tests requiring routine and/or complex instrumentation on flow cytometer, optical, photometric, electronic, automated scintillation, etc.

Review and evaluate literature for new testing and techniques.

Dispose of or properly handle biological, radioactive, and/or hazardous water in a manner that is consistent with laboratory, university, state, and federal government policy.

Participate in the ordering activities for supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.

Instruct laboratory staff and when required, resident physicians, in the performance of laboratory tests of all types which require a high degree of skill and training, involving all STAT procedures.

Interpret laboratory results and discuss results with Pathologist, other clinical staff, and laboratory supervisors. May suggest additional tests based on results obtained.

May complete unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification: Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS or IMLS), categorical or specialist technologist (such as Chemistry, Cytotechnologist, Histotechnologist, Microbiology, Blood Banking, Molecular Biology) by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Certified Point of Care Professional (CPP) by American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), or Clinical Laboratory Technologist by former Dept of Health Education & Welfare (HEW/HHS).

Bachelor's degree. Individuals who have qualified as a medical technologist by February 28, 1992 may substitute an associate's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
