Job summary

Piab Group in Hickory, North Carolina is looking for a Mechatronics Engineer to design customized end-of-arm tooling for various product handling systems. You will collaborate closely with Project Engineers and utilize SolidWorks for modeling.

Job Overview

Design customized end-of-arm tooling and components detailed to fit various product handling systems. Joulin tools are designed to be durable, efficient, and able to handle a diverse array of products. Our mechatronics engineer pairs control and intelligent communication with complete pneumatic and mechanical solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work closely with Project Engineers to develop the tool required for product handling systems.
  • Using SolidWorks, model custom EOATs and components for end‑of‑line product handling.
  • Design systems including pneumatic, electrical, and/or mechanical controls systems.
  • Design for various manufacturing approaches including but not limited to 3D printing, sheet metal, weldments, and multi‑axis machining.
  • Design and implement embedded hardware and software for EOAs.
  • Develop controls and sensor integration to improve precision, throughput, and reliability.
  • Complete new product testing, validation, and data collection or test bench.
  • Apply knowledge and principles of engineering to designs for effective and efficient products.
  • Develop an understanding of the Piab and Joulin product line to maximize the utilization of relevant existing technology.
  • Generate technical documents for manufacturing and operation (drawings, schematics, BOM, etc.).
  • Interface with company ERP and PDM/PLM system daily.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s (preferred) in Mechanical, Electrical, or similar Mechatronics concentration.
  • 2‑3+ Years of professional 3D CAD experience.
  • Experience interfacing with microcontrollers, PLCs, sensors, and actuators.
  • Experience with industrial networking and communication protocols.
  • Practice in drafting engineering drawing, schematics, and operation methods.
Preferred Qualifications
  • C, C++, Linux and/or shell scripting knowledge.
  • Knowledge of EtherNet/IP, IO‑Link, PROFINET, PROFIBUS.
  • Experience designing for industrial environments and ISO compliance.
  • Troubleshooting and debugging experience.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, Travel
  • The position is in an office environment, but interaction with shop personnel is encouraged to build an understanding of the manufacturing process and tools designed/sold.
  • Testing and validation will be conducted in the R&D lab and require hands‑on work.
  • Travel is minimal but may be required on occasion.
  • Remote work may be allowed or required at times.
