Qualifications

Job Title: Junior Mechanical Technician

Job Overview

Plains is an industry‑leading transportation and midstream provider specializing in the transportation, storage, processing and marketing of crude oil. We own an extensive network of pipeline transportation, terminalling, storage and gathering assets across key oil‑producing basins and major market hubs in the United States and Canada. The Junior Mechanical Technician performs required scheduled and unscheduled mechanical maintenance on pumps, valves, engines, tank mixers, and related equipment, and conducts pump‑to‑motor alignments. This field‑based role involves frequent work in open environments with extreme temperatures and in proximity to high voltage and chemicals, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance, upkeep and cleaning of station, pipeline and terminal facilities, including valve, engine, motor, mixer and piping systems.
  • Conduct routine scheduled and non‑scheduled equipment maintenance, either independently or under guidance from other maintenance personnel.
  • Service and lubricate mechanical equipment such as tank mixers, pumps, motors, valves, and related components.
  • Perform lockouts on company facilities and conduct safety inspections.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks on positive displacement pumps following vendor manual guidelines.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks on centrifugal pumps following vendor manual guidelines.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks on small engine drive pumps following vendor manual guidelines.
  • Maintain tank mixers, servicing gearboxes and determining repair or overhaul needs.
  • Perform valve maintenance, including regulatory inspections and routine upkeep as required by manufacturers.
  • Install and maintain process piping per engineering specifications.
  • Assist in ensuring operating equipment inspections are performed and records maintained within the company CMMS (Maximo).
  • Demonstrate safe work practices in accordance with Plains safety policies and procedures.
  • Report hazard identification and near‑misses to senior personnel promptly.
  • Assist with additional pipeline‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently in or recently completed the first year of a related trades apprenticeship program.
  • Relevant work experience preferred.
  • Proficient reading, writing and speaking in English with basic math skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret facility drawings, technical schematics, and operational/service manuals.
  • Strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capability to troubleshoot and conduct mechanical repairs on company equipment.
  • Working knowledge of precision measurement instruments such as micrometers, calipers and alignment devices.
  • Good computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and the company CMMS (Maximo).
  • Familiarity with federal, provincial and industry regulations and Plains operating procedures.
  • O.Q. qualified to perform all Level I tasks.
  • Outstanding safety record.
  • Completion of company Haz‑Mat training, required DOT operator qualifications, and mandatory safety training.
  • Ability to work under moderate to heavy physically demanding conditions, including outdoor work in extreme heat and cold.
  • Legally authorized to work in the country of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract for the posting province.
  • Clean criminal history and satisfactory reference checks.
  • Compliance with the company drug and alcohol policy, including pre‑employment screening.
