Job description

Overview: APS is seeking an experienced Mechanical, Electromechanical, Ocean, or Advanced Manufacturing Engineer to support the development of subsea R&D systems for DARPA, ONR, and the broader U.S. Navy. The position entails design of mechanical systems, components, and structures from blank slate through fabrication, with consideration for an array of multi-disciplinary system constraints, functionality and performance, manufacturability, and lifecycle. This role offers the opportunity to shape next-generation unmanned undersea propulsion, fabrication, and payload integration approaches. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to create, mature, and fabricate complex maritime defense systems working with engineers and mathematicians across a variety of fields. We are looking for someone that can bring efficient systems engineering rigor while thriving in a dynamic and fast-paced environment that emphasizes innovation and creative problem solving. The ability to operate with autonomy and to critically evaluate system needs across multiple disciplines to find the ideal balance for overall system architecture is critical. Experience with advanced manufacturing methods such as laser welding, metal additive manufacturing, and the use of highly alloyed stainless steels, copper nickel alloys, and titanium is likely to be relevant. At APS you will work in a small company environment where technical and administrative excellence are rewarded, and an entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged. This position will allow applicants to make meaningful contributions to the APS mission.

Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage innovative designs and arrangements of ocean systems
  • Perform thermal, stress, buckling, electromagnetic, and other calculations or numerical analyses to validate designs
  • Identify system level trades and balance designs as components mature
  • Maintain awareness of applicable system level requirements and document satisfaction of them through reports, briefs, or other documentation
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with novel systems, subsystems, use cases, or fabrication approaches
  • Produce fabrication drawings and support manufacture through vendor interactions
  • Perform tolerance analyses and define appropriate GD&T
  • Identify and maintain critical interfaces through Interface Control Drawings (ICDs)
  • Develop fixturing and tooling for rigging, test, or demonstration
  • Support design reviews through the generation of Technical Data Packages (TDPs)
  • Define instructions for Technician work associated with assembly and testing
  • Occasional travel in support of Government program reviews, vendor site visits, and test events
  • Participation in proposal efforts to capture new business
  • Technical leadership and mentoring
Required Skills and Attributes
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electromechanical, Ocean, or Manufacturing engineering, or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting development of new multidisciplinary systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively in small team environments and with subcontractor and government teams
  • Ability to articulate impacts of design decisions to team stakeholders and identify appropriate tradeoffs
  • Awareness of a broad spectrum of manufacturing methods and an ability to identify pros and cons of different approaches as it pertains to maritime systems
  • Experience with CAD and drawing generation
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working in early-stage development efforts and SWAP constrained redesigns.
Preferred Skills and Attributes
  • Advanced degree (M.S., M. Eng., Ph.D.) in Mechanical, Electromechanical, Ocean, or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience developing underwater, maritime, autonomous, or subsea systems.
  • Experience supporting defense R&D programs.
  • Experience working in cross-functional groups that include electrical, ocean, software, and systems engineers and mathematicians
  • General familiarity with subsea components including sensors, comms, actuation, and propulsion
  • Experience with Solidworks, PDM, Matlab and/or Python
  • Experience performing tolerance analyses. SolidWorks TolAnalyst use, or third party variant (e.g. CETOL 6σ, EZTOL, 3DCS)
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing approaches (e.g. CNC Laser Welding, metal additive manufacture)
  • A functional understanding of electromagnetic components including motors, transducers, linear actuators, etc
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

An immediate full-time position is open in the following location: Groton, CT.
