Job description

Overview

Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is looking for a highly motivated Power Electronics Engineer to join our Sensing and Communications Department. Successful candidates will have a BS, MS, or PhD degree in electrical engineering with a focus in power systems design. Successful applicants will support the design and development of a wide variety of underwater maritime systems, including electromechanical actuation systems, payloads for unmanned underwater vehicles, acoustic communication transceivers, motor systems, and high‑power acoustic transmit arrays.

Candidates must have a proven track record of designing, implementing, and testing high voltage / high power electrical components of prototype R&D systems. Experience designing energy storage system components, DC/DC converters, power amplifiers and magnetics, and interfacing to the embedded processors that control such devices is required. Previous experience laying out boards and/or managing vendors which provide layout services is highly desired, as is experience designing for EMC and testing and integrating high power components into larger systems.

APS works on exciting, technically challenging, cutting‑edge technologies that will expose candidates to a wide variety of multidisciplinary fields and allow for unique growth opportunities and learning experiences. At APS, you will work in a small company environment where technical excellence is rewarded, and an entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged. You will have the chance to work directly with colleagues and customers that value innovation and creativity.

Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Design, development, integration, and debugging of complex power electronics systems.
  • Travel to support on‑site testing up to 25%.
Required Skills and Attributes
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in power systems.
  • BSEE and 4 or more years of relevant experience, or MSEE and 1 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with power system design including circuit analysis and simulation, component selection, schematic capture, PCB design, and verification testing.
  • Design of DC/DC and AC/DC power systems ranging from 500 W to 50 kW for use in harsh operating environments.
  • Experience with implementation of high‑availability power supplies and/or failover systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electronic power devices such as MOSFETs, Schottky diodes, SiC FETs, and IGBTs.
  • Proven experience designing with electromechanical actuators, DC/DC converters, power amplifiers, and magnetics.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic systems.
  • Basic understanding of MATLAB‑aided data analysis.
  • Experience or familiarity with electronics assembly, wiring, crimping, soldering, a plus.
  • Proficiency with electronic laboratory test equipment including digital multimeter, oscilloscope, function generator, and digital voltage and current measurement probes.
Preferred Skills and Attributes
  • Prior experience designing electronics for underwater maritime systems.
  • Prior experience designing electric machines and/or drives.
  • Experience working with acoustic transducers.
  • Experience with various power converter topologies such as buck, boost, flyback, SEPIC, etc. and their control methodologies.
  • Experience with or oversight of electronic layout, bill‑of‑materials, and assembly process.
  • Experience creating technical content for new products, ideas, or other business development pursuits.
  • Experience working in an R&D environment and small multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience mentoring junior EE staff on electronics design, PCB implementation, and board troubleshooting.
  • Experience briefing customers.
