Job summary

Siemens in Lexington, NC is seeking a Mechanical Systems Engineer – Galley/Washroom to join Interiors Engineering. This full-time, on-site position supports production activities for passenger coach rail vehicles, focusing on Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms.

The role reports to the Interiors Engineering Manager, with guidance from system architects, and involves coordinating with production engineers, ensuring interfaces and regulatory requirements are met, and mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or higher.
  • Experience with 3D CAD for design/integration of mechanical systems (preferably Creo).
  • Experience integrating complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Provide systems engineering support to production topics impacting manufacture of passenger rail vehicles for Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms.
  • Work under guidance of System Architects for respective systems.
  • Provide guidance to production engineers in resolving production issues.
  • Ensure internal/external interface, contractual, and regulatory requirements are met in as-manufactured condition.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners in the United States and Europe.
  • Familiar with design review documentation and CDRLs for the systems.
  • Be detail-oriented, take ownership, and work independently on projects to troubleshoot issues.
  • Be familiar with interfaces and installation requirements to ensure successful integration.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Work with management to ensure business needs are met.
  • Manage duration of tasks with time and cost considerations.
  • Travel up to 15% including US, Europe, and Asia.

Job description

The Mechanical Systems Engineer – Galley/Washroom reports to the Interiors Engineering Manager and works under the close supervision and guidance of the respective System Architects for each system. This is a full-time, in-person (not remote) role located in Lexington, North Carolina. You will be the on-site subject matter expert responsible for supporting engineering and production activities involved in the manufacturing of passenger coach rail vehicles for the Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms systems.

Responsibilities
  • Provide systems engineering level support to production-related topics impacting the manufacture of passenger rail vehicles for the Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms systems
  • Work under the guidance and supervision of the System Architects for the respective systems
  • Provide guidance and direction to production engineers in the resolution of production issues
  • Ensure that internal and external interface, contractual, and regulatory requirements are met in the as-manufactured condition
  • Collaborate regularly with internal and external partners both within the United States and in Europe
  • Be familiar with the design review documentation and CDRL’s for the Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms systems
  • Must be detail-oriented, take ownership of projects, and be able to work independently on projects to troubleshoot technical issues with minimal direction.
  • Be familiar with the mechanical, electrical, and software interfaces for the Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms systems as well as the requirements for installation, ensuring successful integration in the as-manufactured condition
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers
  • Work collaboratively with management to ensure business needs are maintained
  • Manage duration of assigned tasks independently with consideration of both time and associated cost
  • Travel up to 15% including regular travel within the United States, Europe, and Asia
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience
BS degree in
  • Mechanical + 5 years of relevant experience; or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering + 2 years of relevant experience; or PhD in Mechanical Engineering + 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Experience using 3D CAD software for the design and integration of mechanical systems (preferably PTC Creo)
  • Experience in the successful integration of complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Working knowledge of interpretation of electrical schematics
  • Experience in the manufacturing of complex systems
  • Experience communicating complex technical topics to internal and external audiences through written and verbal means
  • Experience releasing parts and drawings through an Engineering Change process (ECR/ECN/ECO)

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, And Experience
  • Rolling Stock Engineering experience and the vehicle platforms they are derived from.
  • Working knowledge of typical railway Heavy Rail design standards applicable to Galleys, Water & Waste, and Washrooms
  • Familiarity with the design and integration of Galley, Water & Waste, and Washrooms equipment for passenger heavy rail vehicles
  • PE License, Mechanical Engineering
