Job summary

R.J. Corman Railroad Group is seeking a Mechanical Supervisor for Railcar Maintenance & Compliance in Lexington, KY. The role oversees repair and maintenance of railcars, reads reports, assigns tasks, and ensures safety and regulatory standards are met.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, equipment inspection, stock management, and coaching staff. Requires 5–10 years in railcar/mechanical roles and FRA/AAR inspection knowledge. Travel up to 80% is expected.

Qualifications

  • Must have 5-10 years as railcar, diesel, automotive or aircraft mechanic or technical certifications.
  • Mechanical aptitude; apply mechanical principles and assess defects.
  • Knowledge of railcar components and FRA & AAR inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Reads reports to determine repairs and assigns duties based on worker abilities.
  • Ensures adherence to procedures and to company and governmental standards.
  • Directs preventive maintenance of railcar components (wheelsets, side frames, bolsters, lading, air brakes).
  • Monitors stock; requisitions needed parts and maintains shop budgets.
  • Inspects shop equipment and safety compliance; patrols sites for methods and PPE compliance.
  • Audits railcar billing and inspects equipment for regulatory compliance.
  • Provides training to mechanical employees on safe, productive work procedures.
  • Travel up to 80% as business needs require.

Description

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in repair and maintenance of railroad railcars and passenger cars.
  • Reads management and railcar alert reports of railcar problems or malfunctions to determine repairs to be made.
  • Assigns duties to workers based on worker abilities and nature of required repairs.
  • Observes progress of work to ensure adherence to prescribed procedures and adherence to company and governmental standards.
  • Directs workers to perform preventive maintenance of railcar components, such as wheelsets, side frames and bolsters, lading, and air brakes.
  • Monitors stock of replacement parts to detect shortages of parts needed for future repair and maintenance, and requisitions needed parts.
  • Examines shop equipment, such as welding machines and ASCTD’s, to verify that equipment meets safety and performance standards.
  • Patrols work sites to observe methods, to inspect safety equipment, and to ensure compliance with company, AAR, and governmental regulations.
  • Monitors safety, quality and production performance in shop, terminal and outline points.
  • Works with the Operations team to develop plans to ensure the operational needs are met.
  • Routinely audits railcar billing and inspects equipment on regular bases to ensure compliance.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing railcars and equipment as needed.
  • Coach and train mechanical employees on safe and productive work procedures.
  • Responsible for keeping track of employee time associated with hourly shop budgets.
  • Responsible for maintaining shop expense budget along with yearly capital request.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience as railcar, diesel, automotive or aircraft mechanic or technical Certifications required.
  • Mechanical Aptitude, must understand and apply mechanical principles, make judgments regarding defects for repairs and replacement.
  • Knowledge of Railcar components required.
  • Experienced in FRA & AAR inspections required.
  • Knowledge of power and hydraulic tools.
  • Welding and oxygen/acetylene torching experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations.
  • Knowledge of federal railroad regulations.
  • Must be able to read and understand service and parts manuals.
  • Must have a safe driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to perform physical strenuous work.
  • Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Requires constant standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and balancingin a safe manner.
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Travel up to 80% as business needs require.

Environmental Conditions:

Performs duties in multiple environments including office, shop and outside settings, in and around moving vehicles and rail equipment. Exposure to weather elements; and appropriate PPE required.
