Job summary

CSX Transportation, Inc. seeks an experienced supervisor to manage the quality and safety of inspections and repairs for rail cars and locomotives at a Mechanical terminal and on the line of road.

The role ensures work complies with CSXT safety rules, FRA and AAR standards, and drives best practices in safety, quality, and production. The position involves budgeting oversight, cross-functional conflict resolution, and coaching both managers and union employees, with shifts in a 24/7 operation

Qualifications

• 7+ years of supervisory experience in transportation or rail operations.
• Knowledge of FRA and AAR standards.
• Ability to forecast staffing and materials.

Responsibilities

• Execute and communicate the safety plan across departments.
• Lead safety briefings and promote proper procedures.
• Conduct safety observations and tests for compliance.
• Identify hazards and elevate issues to resolution.
• Oversee car inspection, yard, and line-of-road work to meet standards.
• Coach and train team members, including union staff.
• Forecast staffing and material needs to meet objectives.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Manages the quality of inspections and repairs of both rail cars and locomotives for defects and unsafe conditions within a Mechanical terminal and on the line of road. Ensures work is performed safely according to CSX Transportation (CSXT) safety rules and is compliant with Association of American Railroads (AAR) standards and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations. Effectively manages best practices in safety, quality, and production. Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement within assigned area of responsibility. Serves a primary role in operational budgeting. Manages conflict resolution cross-functionally. Develops and coaches both managers and union employees.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

• Execute and communicate the safety plan outlined by the department, shop management, and safety committees.
• Facilitate thorough safety and job briefings to promote safe practices and proper procedures for completing assigned tasks.
• Conduct safety observations and operational tests to ensure compliance.
• Eliminate, control, and communicate hazards and safety issues within the shop and yard, elevating for resolution as necessary.
• Manage activities of car inspection, train yard, and line-of-road ensuring that required work is performed to meet CSXT, FRA, and AAR standards.
• Coach, develop, and train others to achieve desired results.
• Delegate and monitor daily shop and yard strategies.
• Forecast staffing, scheduling of personnel, and material requirements to meet business objectives.
• Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• 7 or more years of supervisory experience in Transportation, Logistics, Rail Operations, Business/Strategic Management, Skilled Trades (building/construction, electrical, mechanical), or the Military

• Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree

Job Requirements

• Available to report to work with two-hour advance notice
• Different shifts as assigned in a 24 hour/7 days a week operation (incl working weekends)
• Hours which include rotating on-call responsibilities which may be outside standard hours
• Work with equipment that intensifies the heat factor
• Work hours may vary in length and schedule (may include a non-standard work week)
• Work outside in all weather conditions
• Work in a dynamic environment with many distractions
• Work flexible days/hours as dictated by business needs
