Job summary

Thomas Built Buses, Inc. in High Point, NC is seeking a mechanical design engineer to design school bus body components and lead related testing and compliance efforts.

The role requires CAD-driven development, BOM creation, and collaboration with Production, Manufacturing Engineering and QA to ensure manufacturability, safety, and cost effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • Alternative: Associate degree with 2+ years of related experience.
  • 6+ years of design engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and strong communication; proficiency in 3D CAD.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop school bus body components.
  • Apply CAD to develop 3D models, installations drawings and BOMs.
  • Analyze and resolve production issues; implement cost effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with Production, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Fabrication, QA.
  • Interface with Test & Compliance to prototype systems and test results.
  • Research advances in vehicle design and apply best practices.

Job description

Inside the Role Thomas Built Bus designs, builds and sells school buses for the American and Canadian market. The vehicles are type C built over a Freightliner chassis, type D with front and rear engine variants built over Thomas chassis, and type A minibuses built over Ford and General Motors chassis. This role will be focused on the design of the school bus bodies for these products and any related testing and compliance. Successful candidates will apply the theoretical principles, engineering techniques and practical experience towards designing vehicles that are safe, compliant, reliable, serviceable, energy efficient, competitive and use the latest technology available in the industry.

Posting Information

We provide a scheduled posting end date to assist our candidates with their application planning. While this date reflects our latest plans, it is subject to change, and postings may be extended or removed earlier than expected. Position offers a starting salary range of$86,000 - $110,000 USD. Pay offered dependent on knowledge, skills, andexperience. Benefits include annual bonus program; 401kcompany contribution with company match up to6% as well as non-elective company contribution of3 - 7% depending on age;starting at 4 weeks paidvacation; 13+ calendar holidays; 8 weeks paidparental leave; employee assistance program;comprehensive healthcare plans and wellnessprograms; onsite fitness (at some locations); tuitionassistance and volunteer paid time off; short-termand long-term disability plans.

Job Description

What You Drive at DTNA Apply engineering techniques and principles to design and develop school bus interior/exterior body components. Apply CAD principles to develop 3D models, installations drawings and Bills of Materials. Independently analyze and proactively provide creative, technically-feasible solutions to problems encountered in production. Promptly resolve product build issues. Collaborate with Production, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Fabrication, Quality and other departments to implement manufacturable and cost effective design solutions that meet government regulations and specifications. Interface with Test & Compliance personnel to prototype new systems, perform development testing and apply test results to new designs. Proactively inform middle management of project issues, delays and risks. Research state-of-the‑art developments in the vehicle industry and apply the latest advances and best practices as appropriate.

Knowledge You Should Bring

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering OR an Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of related experience OR 6+ years of design engineering experience required. Demonstrated teamwork, strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with 3D CAD design required (Creo preferred). An attached resume is required. Exceptional Candidates Might Have Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes i.e. press brake, roll forming, fasteners, stampings, etc. preferred. Ability to identify and solve problems on the assembly line preferred #LI-TN1 #LI-Onsite
