Job Title: Mechanical Preconstruction Director

Location: Orange, CA

Position Overview

We seek an experienced and strategic Mechanical Preconstruction Director to lead our preconstruction department in Orange, CA. This leadership role oversees all mechanical preconstruction efforts, including budgeting, estimating, conceptual design analysis, value engineering, and coordination with design and construction teams. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems within commercial and institutional sectors and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the mechanical preconstruction team, including estimators, BIM coordinators, and project engineers.
• Direct the preparation and delivery of mechanical estimates, budgets, and proposals for commercial HVAC and plumbing projects.
• Collaborate closely with project owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, and internal teams to define project scope, schedule, and budget.
• Provide leadership in design-assist/design-build projects, offering guidance through system selection, constructability reviews, and cost analyses.
• Establish and refine estimating standards, tools, databases, and workflow processes.
• Participate in value engineering, cost mitigation strategies, and lifecycle cost analysis.
• Ensure seamless transition from preconstruction to project execution.
• Attend client presentations, design meetings, and preconstruction strategy sessions as a company's senior representative.
• Stay current with market trends, construction costs, and building system technologies.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of mechanical construction experience with at least 5 years in preconstruction leadership roles.
• Proven experience with commercial mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, piping) in healthcare, higher education, labs, and extensive commercial facilities.
• Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to manage teams and client relationships.
• Proficient in estimating software, MS Excel, and Bluebeam; familiarity with BIM tools and workflows is a plus.
• Strong knowledge of local codes, LEED/sustainability standards, and construction best practices in California.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license or LEED AP certification.
• Experience with Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), design-build contracts, and negotiated work.
