The plant is located in River Rouge, MI on Zug Island. It produces coke from various types of coal blends and is then used as fuel in the blast furnaces at the steel mill.
This is not a position with Detroit Edison; it is a position with EES Coke Battery, a subsidiary of DTE Energy.
Benefits: health, dental, vision, and prescription insurance starting day one of employment. We offer a $2,500 signing bonus and an additional $2,500 upon successful completion of the probationary period of 1,040 hours. Quarterly bonuses of up to $7,500 per year are also available, based on EES Coke Battery’s quality and production. The hourly rate for this position is $37.49. The pay range is $36.15 - $38.83.
Schedule: 12‑hour rotating shift with a 4‑week rotation—14 out of 28 days worked, 7 days off in a row within the 4‑week cycle.
Performs all maintenance functions necessary to maintain all operating and service equipment using standard and specialized tools and equipment, including mobile equipment as required. Operates equipment in conjunction with repairs and aids in operating functions as necessary to maintain continuity of operations. May work alone, with minimal supervision, or with other Maintenance Technicians and coordinates and works in conjunction with operating team members in the performance of maintenance tasks.
This role participates in our structured Pay for Skill Program, offering advancement from Technician I to Technician III with sub‑levels A, B, and C. The job has three levels that an individual may progress through once the minimum experience requirement is met and the individual demonstrates clear understanding of job functions. Each task is assigned points according to complexity. The Mechanical Maintenance Tech I may progress to the next level when 45 points of specified task proficiency are accumulated. Accumulating 45 points will earn the Mechanical Maintenance Tech the mid‑range pay rate, and 85 points will progress the mechanic to the third and highest pay rate within that level.

Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat and cold, moving mechanical parts, high temperatures, vibration, fumes, or airborne particles may require the use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, fire‑retardant clothing, self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), portable air‑purifying respirators, or other protective gear. Exposure to protected and unprotected heights may require a personal fall protection system (harness/lifeline). Noise levels may occasionally exceed the threshold, requiring hearing protection.
