EES Coke Operations

The plant produces coke from various coal blends, and it is used as fuel in the blast furnaces at the steel mill. It is located on Zug Island in River Rouge, MI.

This is not a position with Detroit Edison, it is a position with EES Coke Battery, a subsidiary of DTE Energy.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $36.15 hourly rate.
  • Signing bonus: $2,500 plus an additional $2,500 after 1,040 hours of successful completion of the probationary period.
  • Quarterly bonuses up to $7,500 per year based on quality and production.
  • Health, dental, vision, and prescription insurance starting day one of employment.
Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 3:30 pm.

Job Summary

Location: River Rouge, MI.

Performs all maintenance functions necessary to maintain all operating and service equipment using standard and specialized tools and equipment, including mobile equipment as required. Operates equipment in conjunction with repairs and aids in operating functions as necessary to maintain continuity of operations. May work alone, with minimal supervision, or with other Maintenance Technicians and coordinates and works in conjunction with operating team members in the performance of maintenance tasks.

  • Maintains various types of machinery in the coke‑making process.
  • Participates in safety activities to meet or exceed organizational goals and expectations.
  • Maintains interpersonal relationships with individuals both external and internal to the organization.
  • Active participant in developing and maintaining a culture of professionalism.
  • Follows all rules, policies, and expectations.
  • Ensures environmental compliance.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Must have 3 years of heavy industrial experience to provide the following:
    • Experience calibrating, programming, installing, and troubleshooting “smart” process instrumentation such as temperature, pressure, and level transmitters and control valves.
    • Experience in process control loops.
    • Experience in Distribution Control Systems (DCS) and loop tuning with DCS.
    • Experience with PLC, hydraulic controls, and process analyzers such as opacity, oxygen, combustibles, process gas and chemical analysis.
    • Strong safety experience.
    • Ability to work in a team‑oriented atmosphere.
    • Demonstrated capability to achieve results through people, technology, and processing equipment.
    • Good knowledge of the assigned area(s) of responsibility.
    • Ability to function within a matrix organization where employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader.
    • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional and business leader.
    • Goal‑oriented.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, and management.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Additional Qualifications
  • Sit, stand, or walk for a minimum of 8‑hour shifts, including walking long distances, up and down stairs, and on uneven ground.
  • Frequently lift objects of up to 70 pounds and carry objects of up to 50 pounds; occasionally push or pull objects of up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or occasionally crawl.
  • Enter and work in confined space areas.
  • Talk and hear; use hands and fingers; handle and feel; able to reach with hands and arms extensively.
  • Frequent operations of controls with occasional driving and fine hand function manipulations of tools and equipment.
  • Vision requirements include close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be clean shaven (except mustaches that are above the lower lip and do not affect the respirator seal) when reporting to work.
  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat and cold.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery and equipment with high temperatures.
  • Occasionally exposed to vibration and fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, fire‑retardant clothing, self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), etc.
  • Exposed to protected and unprotected heights requiring a personal fall protection system (harness/lifeline).
  • Noise level may occasionally exceed the threshold, requiring PPE.
