Job summary

North American Stainless is seeking a Laboratory Technician to manage mechanical testing and support day-to-day lab operations. Responsibilities include sample preparation for mechanical and chemistry tests, routine calibration of testing equipment, and accurate data entry into the AS400 system.

The role requires attention to detail, multi-tasking ability, and strong written/verbal communication. Opportunities exist to train colleagues and assist with QC-related testing and documentation.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Prepare mechanical and chemistry samples for testing.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment daily.
  • Enter test results into the AS400 and maintain hard copy records.
  • Perform metallography sample preparation (grinding and polishing).
  • Conduct grain, corrosion and bend testing with results evaluation.
  • Train other technicians for back-up purposes.
  • Document testing procedures and store results in proper locations.
  • Understand and use the sample archive and logging system.
  • Perform special work order testing for QC and other departments.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for all phases and aspects of mechanical testing. The position may also assist with work in other areas of the laboratory as necessary. This position is also responsible for supporting the main laboratory testing activities and day to day operations as directed by the Shift Supervisor, Group Leader, Lab Supervisor, and Lab Engineer.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Sample preparation of all mechanical and chemistry samples.
  • 2. Performs maintenance and daily calibration on various testing equipment.
  • 3. Entering of test results into the AS400.
  • 4. Maintains hard copy results of calibration and test results.
  • 5. Performs sample preparation work in the metallography lab such as grinding and polishing.
  • 6. Performs grain, corrosion and bend testing with result evaluation.
  • 7. Trains other technicians for back up purposes.
  • 8. Documents testing procedures/results and stores in the proper locations.
  • 9. Understands and utilizes the sample archive and logging system.
  • 10. Performs special work order testing for QC and other department
SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Other duties as assigned
  • 2. Participation in relevant continuous improvement programs.
  • 3. Training in new testing procedures or other labs.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

A High School Diploma or GED Equivalency is required. The ability to multi-task and to pay attention to detail is strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Mobility in plant

  9. Some areas may require additional personal protective equipment such as:
  10. e. Respirators; the respirator requires you to be clean shaven in order to comply with company policies and procedures as well as OSHA Regulations.
  11. f. Fire Retardant clothing
  12. g. Acid PPE
  13. 5. Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or Supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy
  14. 6. Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines
  15. 7. Must follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations
  16. 8. Maintain a clean and safe work area
WORK ENVIRONMENT

  2. 2. Clean, well ventilated and safe work areas.
