Job summary

North American Stainless is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Technician to support the cold mill by inspecting, planning, and overseeing maintenance activities in the mechanic's areas.

The role requires coordinating with the Maintenance Engineer, Supervisors, and outside contractors, ensuring spare parts availability, and completing PM and corrective action work orders. It emphasizes safety, teamwork, and hands-on mechanical, electrical, and automated maintenance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of industrial experience or a technical degree in the related field.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects equipment, coordinates with operations, and tracks downtime to identify maintenance issues.
  • Maintains an up-to-date list of maintenance issues in assigned areas and schedules work with the Maintenance Engineer and supervisors.
  • Works on projects and upgrades with supervisors and engineers, including interfacing with equipment manufacturers or outside teams.
  • Ensures spare parts are stocked for assigned areas and coordinates with vendors for part availability.
  • Performs maintenance on electrical, mechanical, and automation systems on downtime or while machines run.
  • Completes maintenance work orders and passes on necessary information to the maintenance team.
  • Fills PM check sheets and supports other Technicians as needed.

General Job Description

This position is responsible for providing maintenance services to the Cold Mill, primarily regarding issues involving mechanical problems. The Mechanical Maintenance Technician's primary responsibilities are the inspection of, maintenance planning of and overseeing the maintenance performed in the Mechanic's assigned areas. In addition, the position requires work on scheduled work orders and on downtime work including Preventative Maintenance and Corrective Action work orders.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Performs inspections, consults with operations, and checks downtime reports to keep current on any maintenance issues or problems in the Mechanical's assigned areas.
  2. Keeps an up‑to‑date list of all maintenance issues in the Mechanical's assigned areas. Works with the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, the Maintenance Group Leader, and outside contractors to get the needed work scheduled and completed as soon as possible based on the urgency of the work to be done.
  3. Works with the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor and the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer on projects and upgrades in the Mechanical's assigned areas. This may involve working with the equipment manufacturer or other outside companies.
  4. Works with the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor and the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer on making sure all necessary spare parts are stocked for the Mechanical's assigned areas. This may involve working with the equipment manufacturer or other outside companies.
  5. Keeps the Mechanical's assigned areas cleaned and free from accumulated trash or used parts. Schedules housekeeping work as needed.
  6. Repairs or replaces defective or damaged components that affect any of the Hot Mill equipment. This includes identifying the part(s) needed, finding and retrieving the part(s) from Spares and installing the parts needed.
  7. Completes work as assigned on maintenance work orders. These work orders include any type of maintenance work (electrical, mechanical, automation) and are performed either on downtime or while the machine is running.
  8. Fills out any information which needs to be passed on to the rest of mechanical maintenance.
  9. Fills out PM Check Sheets where required.
  10. Performs any miscellaneous jobs assigned either verbally or in writing by the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer or Hot Mill Manager.
  11. Fills in for other Mechanical Maintenance Days Technicians or Mechanical Maintenance Technicians on turnaround shift as required.
  12. First to be contacted during off hours for major problems and equipment breakdowns.
  13. Physical requirements include lifting at least 50 pounds, climbing ladders, twisting, bending, stooping, and working in narrow, confined areas.
Supplemental Job Functions
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participation in relevant continuous improvement programs.
Minimum Education, Skills and Experience
  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Two year industrial experience and/or technical degree in the related field
Physical Abilities Required
  • Mobility in plant
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, etc.
  • The employee is frequently required to make use of their hands for technical tasks.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual ability with or without correction.
  • Communication abilities.
Health and Safety
  1. Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  2. Follow Company safety rules.
  3. Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the Supervisor or Manager immediately.
  4. Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required to be used or worn:
    • a. Safety shoes
    • b. Safety glasses
    • c. Hearing protection
    • d. Hard Hat
    • e. Respirators; the respirator requires you to be clean shaven in order to comply with company policies and procedures as well as OSHA Regulations.
    • f. Fire Retardant clothing
    • g. Acid PPE
  5. Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or Supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy.
  6. Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines.
  7. Must follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations.
  8. Maintain a clean and safe work area.
