Qualifications

Job description

The purpose of this job is to perform inspections for compliance with Municipal, State, and National codes and identify defects and potential hazards. Performs residential and commercial mechanical inspections. Consults with engineers, architects, developers, contractors, owners, and the general public. Ensures mechanical equipment for new installations, remodels, replacements, or repairs are installed according to current code and local ordinances by coordinating with contractors, owners, and tenants on mechanical inspections.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Inspects mechanical installations to verify compliance with the Michigan Residential code, Michigan mechanical code, and International fuel gas code
  • Schedules inspections; responds to questions and complaints
  • Issues corrective orders and written violations notices to contractors and owners; reviews permit applications and issues permits
  • Reviews plans for equipment installations for new construction and existing structures or for repairs in industrial, commercial, and residential buildings
  • Consults with contractors, architects, engineers, builders, owners, and other city departments regarding the provisions of applicable codes, ordinances, and design requirements
  • Prepares and administers licensing exams; issues licenses
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on inspection activities
  • Prepares cases for court enforcement; testifies in court
  • Abates hazardous conditions and issues violation/shut-off notices
  • Attends code update meetings for continuing education with building group, mechanical group, and local mechanical inspectors’ association
  • Performs related work as required
Required Education and Experience
  • High School diploma
--AND--
  • At least four (4) years of related work experience
--OR--
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Possession of a mechanical license from the State of Michigan in 3 of the 4 following categories (Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping, HVAC equipment, Refrigeration, Fire suppression ) for at least 1 year immediately preceding application or affidavit of experience approved by the State of Michigan of Construction Codes as outlined in Michigan Act 407.
