Job summary

The City of Detroit is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to oversee heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment within buildings. You will enforce codes, conduct inspections, and determine compliance with plans and standards while supporting safety and welfare in city facilities.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED plus advanced engineering training and relevant experience.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or GED and two (2) years of advanced training in engineering principles and their practical application to refrigeration, air-conditioning, combustion control, and space heating distribution systems.
• Two (2) years of experience in the installation, construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of heating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning equipment and systems.
• Apprenticeship in heating and refrigeration mechanics preferred.
• One year of engineering college training preferred.
• Experience in inspectional and/or supervisory phases of the work may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and test gas-fired, oil-fired, and solid fuel-fired heating equipment and systems for compliance with codes and approved plans.
• Report findings, secure corrections, or issue violation notices.
• Explain code provisions and witness equipment acceptance tests.
• Check licensure of boiler and refrigeration plant operating personnel.
• Investigate violations and prepare notices; perform re-inspections as needed.
