Position Overview
The Mechanical HVAC/Cooling Engineer designs and implements HVAC systems and cooling piping for state-of-the-art data center facilities. The role applies mechanical engineering expertise to develop reliable, efficient, and safe cooling solutions for high-density, mission-critical infrastructure. This position supports system design, analysis, equipment selection, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, documentation, and code compliance throughout the project lifecycle. Strong communication skills in English and Mandarin (both written and verbal) is required.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Design and develop mechanical HVAC systems for data centers to meet cooling and ventilation requirements.
- Design and integrate cooling-system piping, including chiller primary systems and CDU secondary systems; perform calculations and simulations; and prepare compliant layouts, schematics, and piping designs.
- Select and integrate HVAC equipment, including CRAC units, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, sensors, piping networks, air-handling units, and filtration systems, into the overall data center design.
- Collaborate with architects, mechanical and thermal engineers, electrical engineers, and project managers to deliver integrated systems that meet performance and safety requirements.
- Evaluate energy-efficient and sustainable HVAC solutions, including renewable energy sources and advanced liquid-cooling technologies; perform system analysis and energy modeling to reduce energy use and operating costs.
- Prepare technical reports, specifications, and design documentation; oversee HVAC installation and commissioning to meet schedule and budget requirements; and resolve design and performance issues during construction and post-construction.
- Track industry, technology, and regulatory changes and ensure compliance with building, energy, fire, environmental, and local requirements.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of HVAC and cooling-system experience, with a focus on data centers.
- Expertise in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting HVAC and fire-protection systems for high-density computing environments.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC components, including chillers, air-handling units, cooling towers, CDUs, and filtration systems, and fire-protection piping, including wet, dry, and pre-action systems, fire pumps, and sprinkler heads.
- Proficiency with HVAC and fire-protection design software and tools, including Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP, Revit, AutoCAD, FluidFlow, FloEFD, and NFPA standards.
- Familiarity with data center cooling technologies, including precision cooling and air- and liquid-based cooling solutions.
- Experience with energy-efficiency measures and sustainable design practices for data centers.
- Knowledge of NFPA requirements, local fire-safety regulations, and local and international building codes and standards related to HVAC, fire-protection systems, and data centers.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills in English and Mandarin (both written and verbal) is required.
- Experience designing systems for large-scale, mission-critical data centers is preferred.
