Job summary

X-energy LLC is seeking interns for a Summer 2027 program in Gaithersburg, MD. You will support active engineering projects related to reactor design and licensing, assist with day-to-day needs, and contribute to technical analyses under guidance.

The role emphasizes hands-on hardware exposure, CAD/PLM work, and collaboration with engineers and scientists. The 10-week, on-site schedule runs June–August 2027, with standard 8:00 AM–5:00 PM hours.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in - or recent completion of - a degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
• Experience with CAD and PLM software is preferred.
• Hands-on hardware development in a production environment is a plus.

Job Description

This role is responsible for supporting professional employees working in an organizational function related to the Intern's area of study. Depending on the internship assignment, the intern may work alongside engineers, scientists, or industry professionals to contribute to various projects related to their area of study. Under guided supervision, interns will assist with various projects and tasks, contributing to the organization's goals while learning from experienced professionals in the field.

What You'll Do

What You'll Bring

• Current enrollment in - or recent completion of - a degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Academic or hands-on knowledge in a minimum of one of the following areas:
  • Mechanical Design
    • Designing and developing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
    • One plus years of demonstrated hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production environment is required. May include industry internship experience, hobby, or participation in collegiate engineering projects such as: Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Design Build Fly, Rocket Club, etc.
    • Hardware ownership including manufacturing and testing oversight.
    • Use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and product lifecycle management (PLM) software.
  • Thermodynamics
    • Use of 1D flow-solvers performing heat/energy and mass balance (e.g., RELAP, Flownex, NPSS, SINDA/FLUINT, Flomaster, or similar).
  • E.g. UG/NX, SolidWorks, Pro-Engineer, Teamcenter, Windchill, or similar.
  • Structural Analysis
    • Analytical experience with structural analysis hand calculations and structural FEA software programs (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS, NASTRAN, FEMAP, CAESAR, ROHR, LS-DYNA, PIPESTRESS).
  • Thermal Hydraulics
    • Use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis codes (e.g., STAR-CCM+, Fluent, or similar).
  • Mechanical Process Equipment
    • Piping, Ducting, HVAC, Fire Suppression, Pumps, Valves
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Program Details

Location: 9801 Washingtonian Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD

Work Site Expectations: Fully on-site, 5 days per week

Program Length: 10-week program (anticipated June-August 2027; exact dates to be confirmed)

Hours: Standard office hours, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM ET, Monday-Friday

Compensation

As required by Maryland and other applicable state law, X Energy, LLC (X-energy) lists the expected compensation range for a publicly advertised job opportunity based upon the job requirements (e.g. education/training, experience, skill sets, etc.). Individual candidates who meet the job requirements for the posted position will be offered a salary within this range based on their respective levels of education/training, experience, and other qualifications unique to them. Salary ranges may vary based on the specific office location and region referenced in the posting to take into consideration differences in cost of living and may not be reflective of all regions. Please note that compensation ranges listed for US job postings reflect base salary only and do not include benefits or other incentives.

A reasonable estimate for this position at the level of experience required is:

$25/hour for undergrad; $40/hour for graduate
