Job summary

Atlas Copco in Grayling, MI is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Designer to turn customer needs into functional tooling concepts. You will collaborate with the Engineering Manager to develop 3D models and detailed drawings, applying GD&T and standard practices.

This on-site role emphasizes precision, timely delivery, and cross-functional teamwork with manufacturing and suppliers. You should have a Mechanical Engineering degree and hands-on CAD experience with AutoCAD and SolidWorks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • AutoCAD experience and SolidWorks knowledge.
  • Understanding of mechanical design and engineering drawing practices.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing, assembly, or machine design concepts.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to define technical problems, gather information, analyze data, and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams.
  • Self‑motivated with strong organizational and time‑management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for mechanical designs associated with production of fastening and Automation solutions.
  • Design applications that meet customer requirements & are cost effective.
  • Maintain company standard drawings on products / systems.
  • Follow standards drafting practices.
  • Design creation will include 3D models, 2D layouts, detail drawings, & bill of material.
  • Consistently meet project deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Interact and work well with coworkers and customers.
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment, promoting teamwork and collaboration.
  • Punctual and consistent attendance at work is mandatory.

Are you our Mechanical Engineering Designer

This role reports directly to the Engineering Manager at our Atlas Copco-Grayling, MI facility. In this role, you will collaborate with the Engineering Manager and customer during the development of concepts and designs. Use your wisdom and mechanical ingenuity to create a highly functional tool design that meets the customer needs.

To succeed, you will need
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and working knowledge of SolidWorks through coursework, internships, co-op programs, or professional experience.
  • Understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering drawing practices.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Familiarity with manufacturing, assembly, or machine design concepts.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to define technical problems, gather information, analyze data, and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross‑functional teams.
  • Self‑motivated with strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Desire to learn, develop technical skills, and grow within a design engineering role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Internship, co-op, senior design project, or hands‑on experience related to mechanical design.
  • Familiarity with automotive manufacturing, assembly equipment, or automated systems.
  • Exposure to tolerance stack‑up analysis, fits, and basic machine design concepts.
  • Experience creating 2D drawings and 3D models in a CAD environment.
