OakTree Staffing is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to sustain current products and develop new ones. The role focuses on applying engineering principles to improve assemblies and sub-assemblies, implementing Design for Manufacturing and cost-control initiatives, and working across manufacturing and testing teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • 5–10 years of mechanical design experience in industrial settings.
  • Field experience with seismic vibrators is preferred.
  • Experience with heavy industrial mobile equipment in construction/mining/forestry/military sectors is preferred.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and hydraulic schematics is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems including hydraulics, frames, engine packages, cooling and HVAC.
  • Test designs via modelling and hands-on testing of models and prototypes.
  • Develop and test mechanical, powertrain, thermal, pneumatic components and systems.
  • Create manufacturing specification packages and engineering BOMs.
  • Prepare Engineering Change Notifications (ECN) and NPRs.

Job description

The Engineer will be responsible for sustaining existing products as well as developing new products. They will use their understanding of technology, materials, and manufacturing methods to improve the design and usability of assemblies and sub-assemblies through the use of engineering principles and techniques. They also will use those skills and knowledge to implement Design for Manufacturing, Design for Supply Chain and cost control initiatives.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

Support vehicles engineering team by performing these job functions:

  • Applies knowledge of engineering principles to design key mechanical systems that include hydraulics, mobile machinery frames, engine packages, cooling systems, HVAC, etc.
  • Test the design concept by computerized modelling or physical hands-on testing of models.
  • Design, develop, and test all aspects of structural mechanical, powertrain, thermal, pneumatic and hydraulic components, and systems incorporated into the Inova vibrator product line.
  • Must excel in identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner; develops alternative solutions; works well in group problem solving situations.
  • Developing test plans and performing test engineering functions of new prototype machines and current production vehicles.
  • Produce detailed specifications using dedicated software tools to produce specifications, including parts lists and costings.
  • Supports in the identification of new technologies, innovations, and outsourced development partner relationships; plans for integration into future products.
  • Performs sustaining activities to support existing equipment in the field.
  • Produce a full manufacturing specification package including engineering BOMs.
  • Complete all engineering documentation including but not limited to Engineering Change Notifications (ECN's) and New Part Number Requests (NPR's)
  • Perform project management reporting tasks.
  • Meet with internal clients to establish the design brief: including the concept, performance and production criteria.
  • Arrange meetings and liaisons with engineers and other stakeholders to discuss design concepts. Participate in specialist or multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Work within a team to develop in real-time ideas and design concepts using Autodesk Inventor software.
  • Identify the suitability and availability of materials for prototyping, engineering builds, alternatives for supply chain shortages and manufacturing variants.
  • Occasionally travel to engineering and production facilities
  • Writes clearly and informatively; edits spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information Make presentations as required.
  • Write and implement engineering processes and procedures.
  • Work in accordance with all legislation and company policy requirements pertaining to employee safety, health and wellness.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 5 and preferably 10 years' experience in mechanical design in industrial applications and environments
  • Field experience as an engineer, technician, or technical support for seismic vibrators is preferred.
  • Relevant product design and support experience with heavy industrial mobile equipment in the construction, mining, agriculture, forestry, military or seismic industries is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in using Autodesk Inventor/Vault. Skilled in Autodesk AutoCAD 2D
  • Fundamental understanding and working knowledge of analytical tools such as FEA and/or CFD. Skilled in analysis and simulation tools such as Ansys, Nastran, Simcenter Amesim, PTC Mathcad
  • Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics and symbols.
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other commonly used productivity tools
  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact effectively with colleagues, vendors and internal personnel at all levels.
  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills. Close attention to details.
  • Listen to, receive and accept information and instruction from senior team members.

  • Work is primarily in an indoor, well-lit office or warehouse environment.
  • Some work to be completed in the manufacturing area, with some requirement for Personal Protective Equipment
  • Some work may be required to be completed at an external test and or manufacturing facilities.
