The NYC Department of Buildings seeks a Mechanical Engineer, Level 3, to address mechanical code issues and enhance building safety through technical evaluations. This role requires extensive knowledge of mechanical systems, legislative codes, and collaboration on complex projects, with the potential for remote work options.
Job Description (Civil Service Title: Mechanical Engineer, Level 3)
The New York City Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Electrical Code, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency and professionalism. Under direction, the Mechanical Engineer will work on mechanical code related issues, evaluate technical challenges that may result from implementation of recent programs including but not limited to Accessory Dwelling Units, Zoning for Carbon Neutrality, Zoning for Economic Opportunity and Zoning for Housing Opportunity, and work on other various technical subject matters.
The individual, under direction but with great latitude for the exercise of independent judgment, is responsible for:
- Researching complex technical issues with regards to the NYC construction Codes, NYC Zoning resolutions, and technical standards.
- Reviewing reports of a complex engineering nature regarding mechanical systems equipment and installation.
- Preparing mechanical system descriptions, narratives of design alternatives, code interpretations, and other similar technical reports.
- Researching and reviewing applicable referenced design standards, codes, and other related laws and rules.
REMOTE WORK
This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.
Minimum Qualifications- Please note, position is a Level 3, refer to the Special Note for additional qualifications
(1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; and
(2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
A masters degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the mechanical engineering experience required in “1" above.
Special Note
In addition to above qualification requirements, to be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
