Johnson Service Group, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for an eighteen-month contract assignment in the Birmingham, AL area.

The role involves supporting Extended Power Uprates (EPU) for PWR and BWR units, crafting design inputs, and overseeing mechanical design activities across retrofit and new generation projects. The ideal candidate holds a mechanical engineering degree, 20+ years of related nuclear experience, and may hold a Professional Engineer license.

Qualifications

• Minimum Required Experience: bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline; 5+ years of commercial nuclear power plant experience.
• Strong understanding of nuclear plant systems, operations, engineering, or licensing processes.
• Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment supporting EPU-related activities.
• Familiarity with nuclear plant systems, design processes, operations, or licensing.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.
• Experience at another Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) or Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) facility.

This position may require some bending, lifting, climbing, prolonged sitting, prolonged walking, walking on gravel or crawling when necessary.

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer SR 3 Work Location: Birmingham, AL

Requirements:

Project Context We are currently pursuing Extended Power Uprates (EPU) for PWR and BWR units. For these projects we are currently developing Design Input Requests (DIRs) to support analysis by external Architect-Engineer firms to assess the plant under EPU conditions to support the license amendment and potential plant modifications. We will be receiving Task Reports detailing the results of these analyses which will undergo validation through owner acceptance. We are seeking experienced nuclear professionals who can provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle. Minimum Required Experience Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical discipline preferred. 5+ years of commercial nuclear power plant experience. Strong understanding of nuclear plant systems, operations, engineering, or licensing processes. Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment supporting EPU-related activities. Familiarity with nuclear plant systems, design processes, operations, or licensing. Strong technical writing and communication skills Experience at another Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) or Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) facility.

Direct involvement in a Power Uprate (EPU or other uprate project) at a commercial nuclear plant.

Demonstrated understanding of engineering, operations, or licensing considerations associated with power uprate implementation.

Experience & Requirements: 20+ years of related experience. An accredited bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering A professional engineer license is desired.

Skillsets and Expertise

• Significant experience with design of new construction and/or retrofit of power generation or heavy industrial facilities
• The ability to take the lead role for detailed design activities
• Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles
• Proficiency with applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements
• Experience in development, preparation and checking of P&IDs
• Experience with overall design and layout of piping systems
• Pipe sizing and routing, material selection
• Pipe support design
• Equipment selection
• Preparation of inquiry packages/data sheets
• Specification of tanks, pumps, and balance of plant equipment
• Experience with hydraulic calculations.
• Pipe-Flo (or similar software) experience is preferred
• Significant working knowledge of processes equipment including piping, valves (manual/control/relief), pumps, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers
• Experience with relief valve and control sizing
• The ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, design engineering staff and/or vendors.
