Southern Nuclear in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer I to support Extended Power Uprate (EPU) engineering activities for commercial nuclear power plants.

This role provides mechanical leadership for system evaluations, design input development, equipment specs, hydraulic calculations, piping design, and technical review of analyses supporting plant uprate feasibility and modifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of commercial nuclear power plant experience.
  • Experience with power generation or retrofit design for heavy industrial facilities.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles.
  • Experience developing and reviewing P&IDs.
  • Experience with piping system design, layout, sizing, routing, material selection; pumps, valves, tanks; equipment data sheets; hydraulic calculations.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and nuclear design processes.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead detailed engineering design activities in a multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical engineering design inputs and validate project scoping documents.
  • Support system evaluations associated with Extended Power Uprate (EPU) projects.
  • Review engineering reports, calculations, and Task Reports for technical adequacy and owner acceptance.
  • Lead preparation and review of: equipment specifications, valve and equipment data sheets, hydraulic calculations, P&IDs, piping layouts and routing, equipment selection, inquiry packages.
  • Perform pipe sizing, material selection, and piping system design.
  • Support pipe bupport design and balance-of-plant equipment specifications.
  • Provide technical direction to designers and other engineering personnel.
  • Evaluate proposed modifications for feasibility, plant impacts, and design-basis considerations.
  • Support design, systems engineering, operations, and licensing activities for EPU projects.
  • Coordinate with plant personnel, Architect-Engineer firms, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Make sound technical decisions using engineering judgment with limited information.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experiencedSenior Mechanical Engineer Ito supportExtended Power Uprate (EPU)engineering activities for commercial nuclear power plants. This role will provide mechanical engineering leadership for system evaluations, design input development, equipment specifications, hydraulic calculations, piping design, and technical review of engineering analyses supporting plant uprate feasibility and modifications.

The ideal candidate will have strong commercial nuclear experience and significant knowledge ofmechanical systems, piping, P&IDs, pumps, valves, tanks, hydraulic analysis, and power plant retrofit design.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical engineering design inputs and validate project scoping documents.

  • Support system evaluations associated withExtended Power Uprate (EPU)projects.

  • Review engineering reports, calculations, and Task Reports for technical adequacy and owner acceptance.

  • Lead preparation and review of:

    • Equipment specifications

    • Valve and equipment data sheets

    • Hydraulic calculations

    • P&IDs

Required Qualifications

  • Significant experience with new construction and/or retrofit design forpower generation or heavy industrial facilities.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles.

  • Experience developing and reviewingP&IDs.

  • Experience with:

    • Piping system design and layout

    • Pipe sizing and routing

    • Material selection

    • Pumps, valves, tanks, and balance-of-plant equipment

    • Equipment specifications and data sheets

    • Hydraulic calculations

  • Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and nuclear design processes.

  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.

  • Ability to lead detailed engineering design activities and work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

  • Experience withFATHOM, PEPSE, or similar hydraulic/thermal analysis software.

  • Previous experience with Southern Nuclear facilities, including:

    • Plant Hatch

    • Plant Vogtle Units 1–2

  • Experience withBWR or PWR nuclear facilities.

  • Direct experience supportingExtended Power Uprate or other power uprate projects.

  • Strong systems engineering or nuclear plant operations background.

  • Experience with engineering design basis, configuration management, licensing evaluations, or NRC-related activities.

  • Experience preparing or reviewing design changes, technical reports, engineering analyses, and calculations.
