This position works as part of a team supporting high-speed / hypersonic flight evaluation programs within the Department of Defense and NASA. The Mechanical Engineer will lead the interactions necessary for manufacturing limited-scope flight hardware items for the Hypersonic Structures Department. The Mechanical Engineer may also support production efforts related to ground test specimens and hardware. This position works closely with technicians, machinists, inspectors, analysts, and design engineers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead customer interactions related to producing flight items.
  • Lead internal machine shop interactions related to producing flight items.
  • Lead internal Hypersonics Lab interactions related to producing flight items.
  • Lead internal part inspection interactions related to producing flight items.
  • Lead/support shipping arrangements of produced flight items.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Build productive internal/external working relationships.

Other Job Functions

  • Lead external machine shop interactions related to producing Hypersonic Structures items, as required.
  • Lead external part inspection interactions related to producing Hypersonic Structures items, as required
  • Work with internal inventory management personnel to ensure materials are moved, internally, to appropriate locations for use in flight hardware manufacturing
  • Document manufacturing-relevant issues
  • Work closely with Quality to establish and maintain appropriate standards and procedures
  • Apply company policies and procedures to resolve routine issues.
  • Build stable working relationships internally.
  • Receive detailed instructions on all work.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by company and government requirements.
  • Communicate and interact effectively with peers, supervisors, and public, including maintaining respect for others, and following company policies.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities as it pertains to the work.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: No supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Technical Expertise: Experience with manufacturing engineering roles and responsibilities. A knowledge of some manufacturing equipment, GD&T, and part inspection processes is preferred.
  • Communication – Ability to communicate manufacturing needs/inputs internally and to customers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work with customers to define and document requirements, address technical concerns, and provide project status.
  • Analytical Thinking and Detail Orientation – Plans can change that can have large impacts on over assemblies or objectives. Identifying problems, troubleshooting, and developing and implementing solutions requires detailed analysis in each task.
  • Proactive, yet cooperative, involvement – Everything we do is a team effort, and we rely on people to proactively bring their unique contributions to our work.
  • Quality Orientation - Accomplishes tasks by considering all areas involved; no matter how small; showing concern for all aspects of the job; accurately checking processes, procedures, and tasks; being watchful over time.
  • Planning and Organization - Systematically identifies issues to be addressed and plans a course of action for self to ensure the accomplishment of specific objectives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering or mechanical engineering
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET.
  • Preferred active security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET
  • Good collaboration and communication skills.
  • Minimal travel could be necessary to interact directly with customers
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in relevant fields including manufacturing engineering or mechanical engineering
  • Demonstrated history of technical excellence with keen attention to detail.

WORK ENVIROMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position involves work in an office and laboratory environment and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:

  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
  • Protective shoes
  • Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the engineer must be able to:

  • Perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Perform some repetitive motion (keyboarding, mouse, phones, rotation wrist using tools/equipment).
  • Ability to lift objects frequently in performing work.
  • Ability to pull or push objects on a regular basis.
  • Ability to reach for object above head or below waist.
  • Ability to stoop or crouch by bending at the waist or by bending legs.
