Job summary

STSI (Staffing Technical Services Inc.) in Billings, Montana seeks a mid-level to senior Mechanical Engineer with oil and gas industry experience. The role focuses on detailed design, project scope, and technical guidance across disciplines.

You will handle piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and turbines, ensure compliance with ASME and API standards, review P&IDs, and perform stress analysis. Travel and TWIC eligibility are required.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited university (or equivalent).
  • 8+ years engineering experience in petrochemical/oil & gas industries.
  • Experience with pipe design, P&ID development, and equipment review.
  • Willingness to travel and ability to obtain a TWIC card.
  • Strong communication and cross-discipline collaboration abilities.

This is a Mid-level or Senior-level Mechanical Engineer position with experience in the Oil and Gas industry.

Mechanical Engineer

Location: Billings, Montana

Target Rate: $55.00-$85.00 per hour

This is a Mid-level or Senior-level Mechanical Engineer position with experience in the Oil and Gas industry.

Responsibilities And Duties
  • Prepare detailed design of projects in compliance with governing codes, regulatory requirements, and client standards.
  • Develop project scope definition for project proposals and awarded work.
  • Solve problems by using a combination of standard procedures, modification of standard procedures, or methods developed in previous assignments.
  • Complete and coordinate independent studies, analyses, interpretations and conclusions.
  • Give technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Ability to status project and track progress against schedule and budgets.
Required Skills And Abilities
  • Experience developing and approving pipe specifications.
  • Strong experience in design, specification, application, and modification of rotating and fixed equipment, such as:
    • Pressure vessels
    • Heat exchangers
    • Pumps
    • Compressors
    • Turbines
  • Experience in:
    • Equipment drawing review and approval
    • P&ID development and review
    • Material selection
    • Piping layout
    • Pipe Stress Analysis.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME pressure vessel and piping codes, API and other industry standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of inter-discipline requirements
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of consultant engineering workflow and project execution.
  • Strong computer skills - Microsoft Applications (Word/Excel) and engineering software programs, such as CAESAR II, COMPRESS, and FEA programs.
  • Capable of some travel and remote site assignments.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain a TWIC card.
Education And Experience
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited university or equivalent
  • 8+ years engineering experience - preferably in the petrochemical industry with a strong background in Oil and Gas Production and Refining, Gas Compression and Transmission.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to sit/stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
  • Field trips to job sites (local and/or remote) will be required, so applicant must be open to travel and site assignments.
