Job description

As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in automation equipment design and build, you will be responsible for creating innovative solutions for our client’s automation needs. Key tasks include reviewing customer requirements, understanding their manufacturing process, analyzing their parts and plant drawings, creating detailed concepts, designing complete systems in 3D using SolidWorks, building and testing prototypes, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical components seamlessly. You will also oversee the equipment build process, assist other teams in test and debug, and document design iterations. This role demands a strong understanding of mechanical systems, proficiency in SolidWorks tools and GD&T, problem-solving skills, and a passion for incorporating cutting-edge automation technologies.

Experience/EducationQualifications:

  • BS/MS degreeinMechanicalEngineering (Mechatronicsdegreeor focus preferred)
  • 3+ years of experience in the industrial automation industry
  • Proficient in SolidWorks and related CAD/CAM computer tools
  • Experience sizing actuators, servos, sensors, and pneumatics
  • Knowledge of and experience with machining and other fabrication processes
  • Experience applying GD&T principles to part designs and drawings
  • Ability to effectively communicate with outside vendors/suppliers for machined parts to ensure vendor selection and that parts are received as intended
  • Experience with equipment installations and prove-off at customer sites
  • Required –Robotic Automation cell design skills (reach/cycle analyses, safety, risk assessment)
  • Desired - Experience integrating machine vision and 3D laser sensors

Job Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design

  • Interface with clients and peers to develop complete system concepts, define project requirements and review SOW/RFQ specifications for proposals and project management
  • Review client parts, 3D models and drawings to understand part complexity, tolerances and variances
  • Managing projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and coordinating with teams, suppliers, and clients
  • Design complex machinery with pneumatic and electromechanical components
  • Design and integrate robots, EOAT, feeding devices and material handling cells
  • Lead internal and customer design reviews
  • Conduct risk assessments for machine safety systems and robotic cells
  • Produce high level designs and detail/assembly drawings for manufacturing
  • CollaboratewithElectrical and Controls Engineering teams to ensure a smooth integration of mechanical movements with control systems
  • Lead test and debug efforts to jointly identify and resolve issues during the build phase, making adjustments across mechanical, electrical, and control systems as needed with other teams
  • Oversee the building process of the equipment, leading a team of assemblers
  • Install new equipment and troubleshootissues withcompanyinstalledsystems
  • Technicalwriting andEquipmentDocumentation(testplans, operatingmanuals)

This position is fully in-office, located in Morrisville, NC. Remote or hybrid work options are not available, and relocation expenses are not covered.
