Michigan Medicine is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer in Facilities Planning and Development. You will design and oversee mechanical systems across healthcare facilities, coordinate studies, budgets, and construction documents, and guide capital planning.

The role requires a PE license, strong communication, and proficiency with AutoCAD and Office tools. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you’ll lead multi-disciplinary teams on complex renovation and new-build projects, ensuring adherence

Qualifications

• Min 10 years of experience in design & construction, with healthcare focus.
• Professional Engineer license in Michigan or ability to obtain within 18 months.
• Extensive knowledge of mechanical system design in healthcare facilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Familiarity with office software and AutoCAD is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Perform engineering work for planning and design of mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, medical gas) in healthcare facilities.
• Coordinate studies, budgets, and construction documents for multiple projects and prepare CDs for bid & award processes.
• Provide guidance on capital planning, and lead troubleshooting for maintenance and construction activities.
• Lead development of standards, master plans, design guidelines, and preferred suppliers.

Job Summary

An opportunity for a Lead Mechanical Engineer is available with Facilities Planning and Development, UM Health. The position reports to the Manager of Engineering. The Facilities Planning and Development department provides a broad spectrum of services related to facilities operations and project construction.

Responsibilities

• Performs a variety of engineering work in the planning and design of the various mechanical systems used in healthcare facilities. These systems include HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and medical gas systems. Coordination and/or participation in the preparation of estimates and/or plans and specifications for several concurrent new building, building renovation, and/or infrastructure upgrade projects. Able to put together a set of Construction Documents (CDs) for execution by turnkey or bid & award construction process. Such projects may be single discipline or multi-discipline.


• Plan, direct, supervise, coordinate, and participate in the preparation of studies, reports, and budget estimates as part of project work and problem solving. Advise on health systems' routine capital planning.


• Provide in-office and on-site troubleshooting activities associated with maintenance operations and construction projects. Provide direction, leadership, and oversight to resolve issues.


• Provide leadership, engineering expertise, and participate in the preparation of, maintenance of, and implementation of office and University standards, Master Plans, Design Guidelines, Master Specifications, Preferred Manufacturers Lists, and standard design details

Required Qualifications

• Min 10 years of experience in the design & construction industry, much of which focused on healthcare.


• Maintains a Professional Engineer license with the State of Michigan or has the ability to become registered within 18 months from the date of hire.


• Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge in mechanical system design in healthcare facilities.


• Has acquired a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited university.


• Candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills.


• Familiarity with normally encountered office automation software (Microsoft products, email, etc.) and AutoCAD design experience is desired.
