Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA, invites applications for a Mechanical Engineer in the LCLS Experimental Systems Engineering group to advance X-ray and optical instrument technology and develop new operational capabilities. Ideal candidates have a BS in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years’ experience, strong CAD skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Masters/PhD and experience with ANSYS or Matlab are preferred.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering; 2+ years of related experience.
• Willingness to learn fabrication techniques for producing complex components.
• Demonstrated skill with CAD.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a diverse team environment.
• Advanced verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the mechanical engineering development for new initiatives that advance X-ray and optical experiment technologies (increase capability/reduce cost).
• Contribute to the mechanical engineering development for the integration and testing of systems and devices, working with staff scientists, fabrication facilities and personnel, and technicians.
• Responsible for the technical scope and quality assurance working with Project Management through design reviews and standardized engineering practices.
