Job summary

Matrix is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III to perform advanced design and analysis to support multiple projects. This role may act as discipline lead, coordinating internal and external resources across Houston, Tulsa or Pittsburgh.

Responsibilities include developing piping design principles, evaluating equipment, creating project documents, and ensuring safety and quality. Travel and overtime may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is required; MS preferred.
  • PE license is preferred for this role.
  • Experience with industrial piping systems and equipment packages is essential.

Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer III is responsible for performing advanced design and analysis work as directed to support various projects. This role may act as a discipline lead for projects, managing internal and external resources. This position can be filled in Houston, TX; Tulsa, OK; or Pittsburgh, PA.
Essential Functions
  • Actively supports the Company’s commitment to safety and its “Core Values.”

  • Develops broad knowledge of industrial piping design principles and skills in a specific practice area.
  • Evaluates, selects and applies standard techniques, procedures and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects with few complex features.
  • Collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments.
  • Works on small projects or on portions of large projects.
  • Performs moderate design tasks.
  • Coordinates tasks and work with entry level engineers, designers, or administrative staff.
  • Assists in preparing and managing scope, budget and schedule for projects or assignments to include any discipline internal or external resources assigned to support their projects are within scope, budget and schedule.
  • Prepares portions of project documents.
  • Creates or modifies equipment specifications, communicate with equipment suppliers, and technically evaluate critical pieces and packages of industrial equipment.
  • Checks work for constructability, interferences, operational safety, and overall quality assurance.
  • Receives instruction on specific objectives.
  • Receives direction on unconventional and/or complex problems, and possible solutions.
  • Receives a thorough review of completed work for application of sound professional judgment.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Cooperates with other team members; interacts with individuals at all organizational levels in professional manner.
  • Assists with PM, client, customer contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments or meetings.
  • Performs other related duties, as directed.
Qualifications
  • BS in Engineering required; MS degree preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • 5+ years related engineering experience with industrial equipment and industrial piping systems.
  • Strong skill set in understanding PFD’s and P&ID’s; understanding of industrial equipment and equipment packages, and knowledge of selection of valves and other piping specialty components is required.
  • Working knowledge of CAESAR II, AutoPipe, etc. is preferred.
  • Design experience in NFPA 59A, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and ASME Section VIII is strongly preferred.
  • Cooperates with other team members; interacts with individuals at all organizational levels in professional manner.
  • Ability to understand client specifications, procurement, commissioning and start-up standards, documentation, practices, vendor data approvals, etc., strongly preferred. Exhibits excellent listening, oral and written skills.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously under time sensitive deadlines.
  • Demonstratives a proactive approach and consistently positive demeanor.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Occasional and travel overtime may be required.
