Job description

About Charm: Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon‑rich bio‑oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale, we can use bio‑oil to make fossil‑free iron.

We’re expanding our team of ambitious, creative, and hands‑on problem solvers. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning. We take calculated risks and treat mistakes as opportunities to improve.

About the Role

As a Mechanical Engineer based out of our Fort Lupton facility, you’ll design the next generation of pyrolysis technology, implement and troubleshoot mechanical systems in production, and collaborate with electrical, automation, and manufacturing engineers, fabricators, and technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough engineering analysis with process engineers to develop thermal and flow models that inform system design.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical system malfunctions and performance gaps, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute test plans and commissioning campaigns for production hardware, validating performance before and after machine installation.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including electrical engineers, software developers, and mechanical engineers—to integrate mechanical systems into the larger pyrolysis package.
  • Support on‑call production support as needed for critical Operations problems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 3–5 years of seasoned mechanical design experience.
  • Proficiency with CAD, specifically OnShape.
  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer, sensor and actuator selection, and robust operations.
  • Experience with DFMA and FMEA.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, basic fabrication techniques, and engineering drawing creation and release.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical systems.
  • Hands‑on mechanical troubleshooting and assembly experience.
  • Strong willingness to engage directly with all pyrolysis system components.
  • Documentation skills that demonstrate clear design processes.
  • Effective communication of priorities, progress, and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Desire to work with Electrical & Controls Engineers and fabricators to rapidly turn solutions into installed hardware and to improve system performance.
  • Excitement for scaling up hardware that can positively impact climate change.
Additional Desired Skills
  • OnShape modeling experience.
  • Weldment design (process piping and vessels).
  • Design of operation‑facing industrial equipment.
  • Bulk material handling experience (conveyors, pumps, blowers).
  • Experience with 24/7 operations.
What We Offer
  • Equity ownership through stock options.
  • 100% employee healthcare premiums covered.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with multiple plan options.
