Job description

About Charm

Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon‑rich bio‑oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale, we can use bio‑oil to make fossil‑free iron.

Our carbon removal efforts began in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Since then, we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, grown to over a hundred employees, and established three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Louisiana.

We're expanding our team of ambitious, creative, and hands‑on problem solvers. We value psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning. We take calculated risks and treat mistakes as opportunities to improve.

About the Role
  • We’re looking for an engineering technician who is eager to jump into a small team working towards designing an optimally performing pyrolyzer, the backbone of Charm Industrial’s operations and mission.

  • You’ll be working alongside a cross‑functional team of engineers to design, build, and test novel pyrolysis platforms, while also supporting ongoing operations with the B‑Series fleet (and future D/E series machines). You’ll work to continuously improve hardware and systems to meet key performance metrics like carbon conversion and reliability.

  • You’ll be successful at this role if you love working with your hands on electromechanical equipment, you’re eager to learn about pyrolysis, and you’re constantly thinking about how you could improve the system through small and large modifications to make this system optimal for our operations team.

  • If you’re safety‑minded, proactive, mechanically confident, and can prioritize multiple tasks on a daily basis, we’d love to talk with you!

Responsibilities
  • Operate pyrolyzers and component test rigs to increase understanding and reliability, documenting learnings to share with your fellow Engineering team members as you go.

  • Work to improve our Standard Operating Procedures by providing written feedback and suggestions on how to make them more effective and clear.

  • Serve as the eyes and ears of the Engineering team, providing valuable insight when troubleshooting design and operational challenges.

  • Perform routine repairs on the pyrolyzer and any associated equipment, working with vendors as needed to order components.

  • Maintain a safe and clean test area by observing all safety instructions, handling materials with the proper precautions, picking up tools and equipment when not in use, and making suggestions for improvements to safety procedures and practices.

  • Use machinery and powered equipment (ie forklift, personnel baskets, telehandler, scissor lifts, etc) when required for test preparation or execution.

  • Record machine performance data for our Operations and Engineering Development teams’ measurement, reporting, and verification efforts.

  • Record your work in Confluence/JIRA/Google Product Suite, including providing documentation as needed to start growing our operating and maintenance documentation for our equipment.

  • Give written and verbal feedback on the design and operation of the equipment.

  • You’re comfortable communicating with your team on digital platforms. You’re comfortable with data recording and note taking during tests or assembly processes.

Qualifications
  • 2 – 5 years of hands‑on experience around machinery and/or heavy equipment.

  • Practical experience assembling/disassembling novel/complex mechanical systems.

  • The ability to work autonomously and troubleshoot on the job.

  • Experience operating forklifts, telehandlers, scissor lifts, and/or a willingness to learn.

  • A proactive, professional and “can do” attitude.

  • Passion about contributing to our mission and growing the company.

  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl in awkward spaces.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

  • There may be prolonged periods of standing and walking.

Additional Technical Skills
  • Experience operating high temperature and/or high pressure systems.

  • Familiarity with chemical processing systems and the terminology associated with them.

  • Knowledge of electromechanical systems and general electrical troubleshooting skills.

  • Basic to advanced fabrication skills.
