Job description

Overview

This is an Engineering position located in Newport News, Virginia in the Engineering Liaison Office in the Mechanical Engineering group.

In this position, the candidate will be required to provide technical resolutions for a variety of complex construction issues for VIRGINIA Class Submarines at the Newport News Shipyard (NNS). The job will require shipboard investigation on submarines and modules under various stages of construction and navigating an industrial environment.

The candidate will be responsible for adjudicating construction and vendor issues for a wide variety of mechanical deviations. Most work will be centered on troubleshooting manufacturing problems during construction, correcting design deficiencies, and evaluating material discrepancies. The position requires the adjudication of piping and structural issues as needed. The candidate must develop timely engineering resolutions in consideration of an aggressive construction schedule and manage multiple tasks concurrently. The candidate will infrequently be required to develop calculations to support construction resolutions; however, this position is not analysis or CAD-focused.

All mechanical submarine systems are handled including, but not limited to: bearings, flasks/pressure vessels, gears/splines, hatches/doors, hydraulics, linkages/remote operators, pumps, sail masts, shafts, steering/diving, threaded connections, towed arrays, trunks, and valves.

The chosen engineer will interface with NNS Trades, Construction Foremen, Program Office, Management, and Supervisor of Shipbuilding. Interacting and collaborating with design counterparts, working with EB Engineering, Materials, Planning, Welding, shock, and analysis departments will also be required.

Time flexibility is required as the workload can require occasional extended hours and weekends.
