Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT is seeking a Main Machinery Engineer to manage design, development, procurement, ship integration, testing and repair across submarine main machinery components. You will interface with management, vendors, and naval customers, reading drawings, performing analyses, and coordinating cross-functional teams in a fast-paced shipyard environment. Travel and overtime may be required.

Job description

Main Machinery Engineer will be responsible for the project management and oversight of design, development, procurement, ship integration, test and repair efforts associated with all submarine classes of main machinery components including propulsion turbines, reduction gears, couplings, bearing systems and control systems. Engineers will have the opportunity to develop a knowledge base in a wide variety of associated submarine systems, components, and structures in a fast-paced environment of changing issues.
The individual will be required to interface with EB management, Equipment Vendors, Customers (Naval Sea Systems Command), Shipyard Personnel and Ship’s Force. The individual must have a strong proficiency in all facets of engineering principles associated with rotating machinery and controls. The individual should have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and procedures and have strong technical writing and communication skills.
Main Machinery Engineering supports submarine construction/overhaul work locally and at off site locations. Business travel, evening, weekend and overtime work are required based on department needs.

  • Deck-plate support of shipyard test evolutions and resolution of emergent issues.

  • Consult subject matter experts and/or shipyard personnel, when necessary, in the resolution of issues.
  • Interface with various departments to support design reviews, arrangements, procurement, operations, ship integration, test evolutions and repair efforts.
  • Managing multiple concurrent tasks with established deadlines.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in engineering.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense.
  • 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience.
Preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge in submarine design and/or construction.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in m echanical, electrical, civil, or aeronautical/aerospace engineering.
