Job summary

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is seeking a Mechanical/Structural Engineer to design, analyze, and support pressurized mechanical systems for underwater launchers. The role emphasizes FEA and CAD in SolidWorks, collaborating with engineers and government sponsors to ensure safety and performance.

The position requires a Bachelor’s in mechanical/civil/structural engineering, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, or structural engineering.
• U.S. Citizenship is required for the purposes of obtaining/holding a U.S. security clearance.
• Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.
• Physically capable to conduct ship checks on United States Nuclear Submarines.
• Capable of climbing vertical ladders (20’–25’) within the submarine.
• Minimum 2 years of stress analysis experience.
• Minimum 1 year of experience using FEA tools (ANSYS, ABAQUS, Nastran, COMSOL, or SolidWorks Simulation).
• Professional experience with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, analyze, and support fabrication of pressurized mechanical systems for hydraulics, pneumatics, and seawater, for underwater launchers.
• Support development of Technical Data Packages (TDPs) with FEA, free body diagrams, and stress calculations.
• Create 3D CAD parts, assemblies, and 2D drawings in SolidWorks.
• Select design materials based on stress calculations and specs.
• Conduct QA reviews of drawings and TDPs.
• Interface with customers and government sponsors.
• Support testing of designs onboard submarines and travel as needed.
• Research submarine construction drawings using the ATIS System.

Overview

Responsibilities

• Work with and learn from other engineers and designer/drafters to design, develop, analyze, and support the fabrication of pressurized mechanical systems for hydraulics, pneumatics, and seawater, for underwater launchers
• Support the development of Technical Data Packages (TDPs) with the use of free body diagrams, stress calculations, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in ANSYS to prove design meets certain requirements
• Support designer/drafter’s by creating 3D CAD parts, assemblies, and 2D drawings in SolidWorks
• Select design materials based on stress calculations as well as commercial and/or military specifications.
• Conduct quality assurance reviews of drawings and technical data packages (TDPs).
• Interface with customers and government sponsors.
• Support possible testing of designs onboard submarines and in test facilities with some foreign travel possible.
• Conduct research of submarine construction drawings using the Advanced Technical Information Support (ATIS) System.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, or structural engineering.
• Ability to maintain a DoW Secret Clearance.
• U.S. Citizenship Required for the purposes of obtaining/holding a U.S. security clearance
• Physically capable to conduct ship checks on United States Nuclear Submarines:
• Be comfortable in relatively confined spaces.
• Capable of climbing vertical ladders (20’ – 25’) within the submarine.
• At least three (2) years academic experience doing stress analysis with hand calculations
• At least one (1) years academic experience using FEA tools such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, Nastran, COMSOL, or SolidWorks Simulation
• Professional experience with Microsoft Office

Pay Transparency Statement

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is committed to pay transparency for our applicants and employee-owners. The salary range for this position is USD $60,000.00/Yr. - USD $80,000/Yr. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
