Job summary

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is seeking a mechanical/structural engineer to design and support pressurized systems for submarines. You will perform stress analysis, develop TDPs, and create SolidWorks parts and drawings while interfacing with sponsors and customers.

The role requires a DoW secret clearance, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to work in confined spaces and climb submarine ladders. Domestic travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, or structural engineering.
• Ability to maintain a DoW Secret Clearance.
• U.S. Citizenship required for security clearance.
• Physically capable to conduct ship checks on US Nuclear Submarines.
• Comfortable in confined spaces and climbing ladders (20–25 ft).
• At least 3 years of stress analysis experience.
• At least 3 years of experience with FEA tools (ANSYS, ABAQUS, Nastran, COMSOL, or SolidWorks Simulation).
• Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Mentor engineers and drafters to design and support pressurized mechanical systems for hydraulics, pneumatics, and seawater in underwater launchers.
• Develop TDPs with free body diagrams, stress calculations, and FEA to validate design requirements.
• Create 3D CAD parts and 2D drawings in SolidWorks; select materials per stress and specs.
• Conduct design reviews and interface with customers and sponsors.
• Support testing of designs onboard submarines and travel as required.
• Research submarine construction drawings using ATIS.

Overview

Responsibilities

• Work with and mentor other engineers and designer/drafters to design, develop, analyze, and support the fabrication of pressurized mechanical systems for hydraulics, pneumatics, and seawater, for underwater launchers
• Develop Technical Data Packages (TDPs) with the use of free body diagrams, stress calculations, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in ANSYS to prove design meets certain requirements
• Support designer/drafter’s by creating 3D CAD parts, assemblies, and 2D drawings in SolidWorks
• Select design materials based on stress calculations as well as commercial and/or military specifications.
• Conduct quality assurance reviews of drawings and technical data packages (TDPs).
• Interface with customers and government sponsors.
• Support possible testing of designs onboard submarines and in test facilities with some foreign travel possible.
• Conduct research of submarine construction drawings using the Advanced Technical Information Support (ATIS) System.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, or structural engineering.
• Ability to maintain a DoW Secret Clearance.
• U.S. Citizenship Required for the purposes of obtaining/holding a U.S. security clearance
• Physically capable to conduct ship checks on United States Nuclear Submarines:
• Be comfortable in relatively confined spaces.
• Capable of climbing vertical ladders (20’ – 25’) within the submarine.
• At least three (3) years professional experience doing stress analysis with hand calculations
• At least three (3) years professional experience using FEA tools such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, Nastran, COMSOL, or SolidWorks Simulation
• Professional experience with Microsoft Office

Pay Transparency Statement

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is committed to pay transparency for our applicants and employee-owners. The salary range for this position is USD $90,000.00/Yr. - USD $110,000/Yr. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
