Job summary

Garmin in Salem, Oregon is seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 to design and test avionics components as part of a cross-disciplinary project team. You will contribute to both exploratory development and readiness for mass production.

Responsibilities include modeling parts in CAD, supporting design reviews, testing basic systems, estimating tooling and part costs, and coordinating with vendors on custom components.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering with 1 year relevant experience or equivalent
• Excellent academics (GPA >= 3.0)
• Proficiency with CAD software and moderately complex part modeling
• Strong grasp of engineering tools and simulation methods

Responsibilities

• Complete moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
• Model complex parts as an expert CAD user
• Participate in design reviews and provide comments on mechanical designs
• Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify design requirements
• Estimate tooling, part cost and design time for basic mechanical designs
• Communicate with vendors for custom mechanical parts as required
• Specify test plans to validate moderately complex systems
• Knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping and machining processes
• Demonstrate knowledge of suitable materials for basic production parts

We are seeking a full-time

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 for Garmin's Salem, OR location. In this role, you will be responsible for component design and testing of avionics as part of a project team working with cross-disciplinary teams, completing technology explorations and/or delivering to mass production.

Essential Functions

• Complete moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
• Model complex parts as an expert CAD user
• Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs
• Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
• Make estimates on tooling, part cost and design time for basic mechanical designs
• Communicate effectively with vendors that produce custom mechanical parts as required
• Specify test plans to validate moderately complex systems
• Possess knowledge of injection modeling, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining processes, etc.
• Demonstrate proficient knowledge of preferred part materials for basic part production and performance

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering AND 1 year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
• Demonstrates knowledge of CAD software and the ability to model moderately complex parts
• Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of relevant engineering tools

Desired Qualifications

• Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
• Previous work experience in component design, particularly for electronics products
• Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience
• Experience using OnShape, SolidWorks or other CAD software
