Job summary

Placement Club in San Francisco, CA is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems for large-scale building projects. You will perform load calculations, energy modeling, and prepare detailed drawings, specifications and documentation while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

The ideal candidate has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, 5+ years of experience in building systems, EIT is required and PE is preferred.

  • Support value engineering to optimize cost and constructability.

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer to support the design, analysis, and delivery of mechanical systems for large-scale building projects. This role involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems that meet performance, cost, and sustainability goals. The ideal candidate has a strong technical foundation, experience in building systems design, and a passion for innovative, high-performance solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems including air distribution, hydronic systems, and equipment selection
  • Perform load calculations, energy modeling, and system sizing
  • Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements
  • Conduct system performance analysis and troubleshoot design challenges
  • Support value engineering efforts to optimize cost, efficiency, and constructability
  • Evaluate new technologies and sustainable design strategies (e.g., decarbonization, electrification)
  • Assist in life-cycle cost analysis and energy efficiency studies
  • Collaborate with electrical, plumbing, structural, and architectural teams
  • Participate in coordination meetings and BIM/VDC processes
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for compliance with design intent
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including RFIs and field issue resolution
  • Work closely with project managers and field teams to ensure proper system installation
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to verify installation quality and adherence to plans
  • Assist with commissioning activities and system start-up
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to clients and non-technical stakeholders
  • Support client presentations and design reviews
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external partners

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in building systems or MEP design
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or in progress
  • Experience with HVAC system design and relevant codes (ASHRAE, Title 24, IMC, etc.)
  • Proficiency in engineering and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, HAP, TRACE, or similar tools)
  • Familiarity with BIM and integrated project delivery methods is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proactive mindset with a willingness to learn and grow
