Job summary

Actalent in Portage, WI seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop sheet metal and structural components using SolidWorks, from concept to production handoff. You will create and maintain BOMs, collaborate with purchasing and manufacturing, and ensure accurate drawings and documentation for production.

The role requires SolidWorks experience (6+ months) in a manufacturing setting and a Bachelor's in Engineering. This permanent onsite position offers competitive benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; associate degree with relevant experience acceptable.
  • SolidWorks design experience in sheet metal or structural steel components (6+ months).
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably sheet metal fabrication.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles related to sheet metal and structural design.
  • Ability to design in a 3D CAD environment and produce production-ready drawings.
  • Basic project management to support from concept through production release.
  • Strong attention to detail in design and documentation.

  • Develop mechanical designs and variations in SolidWorks.
  • Create and maintain accurate BOMs for materials and assemblies.
  • Coordinate with purchasing for timely material identification.
  • Release final designs with drawings, models, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to optimize designs for fabrication.
  • Support product development with design updates and new configurations.
  • Assist project management by tracking progress from concept to release.
  • Use EPDM or similar tools to manage files and revisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency and fabrication processes.
  • Work hands-on with production teams to validate design intent.
  • Maintain attention to detail across all designs and docs.

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing and developing custom sheet metal and structural components used in a variety of commercial and industrial applications. This role focuses on transforming customer requirements into manufacturable designs through SolidWorks, ensuring accurate documentation, bills of materials, and smooth handoff into production. The position offers the opportunity to manage projects from concept through completion while contributing to high‑visibility, custom‑engineered solutions in a collaborative, hands‑on environment.

Responsibilities
  • Review customer requirements to understand functional needs and design intent for sheet metal and structural assemblies.
  • Develop mechanical designs and variations for fabricated components in SolidWorks.
  • Create and maintain accurate BOMs for materials, hardware, and assemblies.
  • Coordinate with purchasing to ensure timely identification of required materials.
  • Release finalized designs with complete drawings, models, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical and optimized for fabrication.
  • Work with sales, marketing, and quality to align designs with customer and internal standards.
  • Support product development through design updates, improvements, and new configurations.
  • Assist project management by tracking progress and coordinating tasks from concept to release.
  • Use EPDM or similar tools to manage files, revisions, and engineering documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, fabrication processes, and product performance.
  • Work hands‑on with production teams to validate design intent and understand fabrication methods.

Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; candidates with an associate degree must have at least 3+ years of relevant design experience.
  • Minimum of 6+ months of SolidWorks design experience with sheet metal or structural steel components.
  • At least 6+ months of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving sheet metal fabrication.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering principles related to sheet metal, metal fabrication, and structural design.
  • Ability to perform mechanical design for sheet metal products and structural components in a 3D CAD environment.
  • Basic project management experience, including the ability to support projects from initial concept through production release.
  • Strong attention to detail in design, documentation, and communication.

This is a Permanent position based out of Portage, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $70000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
