Job summary

Elliott Equipment Company in Omaha, NE, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop new products and improvements for truck-mounted aerial work platforms, cranes, and digger derricks. You will take projects from concept through production, conducting research, design, analysis, and testing to deliver safe and reliable equipment.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in heavy equipment design, 3D CAD proficiency (Inventor preferred, plus SolidWorks/Creo/NX), and solid GD&T

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing heavy equipment, cranes, aerial lifts, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or similar machinery.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Inventor (preferred), SolidWorks, Creo, or Siemens NX.
  • Strong understanding of machine design principles including welded structures, hydraulics, power transmission, bearings, gears, and structural components.
  • Knowledge of engineering analysis methods including FEA and hand calculations.
  • Ability to interpret and create manufacturing drawings in accordance with GD&T standards.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Must be able to work in both office and manufacturing environments.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites, suppliers, or testing locations may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings using CAD software.
  • Perform engineering calculations including, but not limited to, structural analysis, machine stability, weight distribution, and component sizing.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards and regulations.
  • Select materials, hydraulic components, bearings, fasteners, and other mechanical components based on performance, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Collaborate with electrical, hydraulic, manufacturing, purchasing, and production teams throughout the product development process.
  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Analyze test data and implement design improvements to enhance product performance and reliability.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, quality, service, and customers as needed.
  • Investigate field issues and develop corrective actions and product improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage multiple engineering projects while meeting cost, quality, and schedule objectives.

OVERALL SUMMARY

Perform functions relating to the design and development of new products and product improvements. Responsible for taking projects from concept through production, including research, design, analysis, and product testing. The ideal candidate is self‑motivated and enjoys solving complex mechanical challenges across multiple disciplines to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative equipment.

  • Ability to comprehend and apply mathematical principles of algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics.
  • Ability to interpret and create manufacturing drawings in accordance with GD&T standards.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Proficiency with finite element analysis (FEA) and able to interpret results.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic system design and controls.
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA, ANSI, ASME, and ISO standards related to lifting equipment.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Experience supporting prototype development and product testing.
