Job summary

Cleveland-Cliffs New Carlisle Works in Indiana seeks a Mechanical Engineer to monitor equipment availability, analyze failures, and drive improvements in maintenance practices. You will coordinate outages, support equipment modifications, and work with operations and engineering teams to enhance reliability.

The role requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field, plus 2+ years experience in manufacturing maintenance. OSHA knowledge and strong communication are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor line equipment availability and operating efficiency; identify key problems using Pareto analysis.
  • Perform root-cause analysis of equipment failures and drive corrective actions to reduce recurrence.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance outages and downturn repairs for timely, safe execution.
  • Update drawings and provide guidance for equipment modifications; ensure information is accurate for performance.

Job description

Location: New Carlisle, INAs a Mechanical Engineer at Cleveland-Cliffs, you will be an integral part of the autonomous work teams that make up the New Carlisle Works production and maintenance organizations. The individual at this level is a seasoned equipment technology professional who demonstrates a broad grasp of the technical and administrative aspects of equipment technology and maintenance engineering techniques and principles. Projects assigned are complex, involve multiple variables, and can be cross functional. Individuals in this role prepare effective communications across the organization and aid in problem resolution specific to assigned programs/projects.The facility is in New Carlisle, Indiana and is a 24/7 operation that produces cold-rolled, hot-dipped galvanized and galvannealed, and electrogalvanized steel coils.Summary of ResponsibilitiesMonitors and tracks line equipment availability and operating efficiency issues and creates “pareto” type analysis to identify key equipment problems/ failuresUtilizes appropriate failure analysis techniques to determine root causes of equipment failures and initiates necessary corrective action to eliminate/reduce failuresManage technical aspects of assigned equipment projectsSeek methods or procedures that safely improve maintenance practices which improve equipment performance and reduce costsAssists in the planning of equipment outages, downturn repairs, and the establishment of maintenance shops; sets priorities to ensure timely, efficient repair/replacement of equipmentWork with Operations and Technical personnel to ensure that drawings are updated in keeping with equipment modifications; provides counsel for equipment redesign and secure information necessary for the performance of the positionInvestigate incidents and equipment failure and communicate results and corrective actionsCooperates with equipment suppliers and outside engineering to specify design requirements for new / modified equipment to improve operating performance and/or equipment reliabilityCoordinates the establishment of requirements, standards, and procedures for the equipment inspection; collaborates with departmental inspectors and with the non-destructive testing/predictive technologies group for the proper, timely inspection testing of equipmentOther duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsBachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, from four-year college or university is required, with at least two years of work-related experienceAbility to effectively communicate across all levels or the organizationMicrosoft Office (Word, Outlook, advanced Excel skills, and Power Point)Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basisPreferred QualificationsManufacturing industry experience with knowledge of OSHA safety requirementsExperience in operations, maintenance, or technology in manufacturingExperience working in a union environmentCleveland-Cliffs is a leading North America-based steel producer with focus on value-added sheet products, particularly for the automotive industry.
