This position is for a confidential organization developing advanced technologies in Los Angeles, CA. This is a fully on-site role focused on the hands-on design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of first-of-a-kind mechanical systems. The ideal candidate is a highly practical mechanical engineer who enjoys working directly in the shop and lab, designing, machining, fabricating, and iterating on complex prototype hardware in a fast-paced R&D environment.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and iterate mechanical systems and components for advanced prototypes.
- Perform hands-on machining and fabrication using manual and CNC equipment including mills, lathes, drill presses, and fabrication tools.
- Manufacture precision parts and fixtures to support prototype development, testing, and experimental systems.
- Work directly from engineering drawings, CAD models, and schematics to fabricate and assemble mechanical hardware.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and technicians to rapidly prototype, test, and refine mechanical designs.
- Support the assembly and integration of mechanical systems including piping, pressure systems, pumps, valves, and structural assemblies.
- Troubleshoot mechanical systems during build and testing, performing root-cause analysis and implementing design improvements.
- Modify and improve hardware quickly based on test results and operational feedback.
- Assist in the development of tooling, jigs, fixtures, and test hardware to support engineering development programs.
- Maintain shop equipment, tools, and workspaces to high safety and professional standards.
Experience Required
- 5+ years of hands-on mechanical engineering or prototyping experience in R&D, energy systems, aerospace, robotics, or advanced manufacturing environments.
- Extensive experience operating manual machining equipment (lathe, mill, bandsaw, drill press, grinders).
- Strong background in fabrication, mechanical assembly, and prototype hardware development.
- Experience building and integrating mechanical systems such as piping, pressure vessels, structural frames, pumps, and fluid systems.
- Proven ability to take designs from concept through fabrication, assembly, and testing.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills in complex prototype or experimental systems.
Qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent hands-on engineering experience.
- Strong working knowledge of machining practices, fabrication methods, and mechanical design for manufacturability.
- Proficiency interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and CAD models.
- Practical experience with shop tools, fabrication processes, and rapid prototyping techniques.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, build-test-iterate engineering environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering and technical teams.
- Ability to work on-site in Los Angeles, CA.
