Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to apply standard design techniques on projects, supporting analyses, drawings, and client communication while advancing under senior engineers.

You’ll contribute to design decisions and ensure quality through coordination with EOR and other disciplines. Ideal candidates hold a four-year ABET-accredited engineering degree, are a registered Professional Engineer, and are proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, and industry tools such as

• Registered Professional Engineer credential or eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Begin assuming responsible charge for portions of project designs under supervision.
• Develop design approaches and perform engineering studies using industry software.
• Oversee preparation of drawings and documentation, ensuring accuracy and standards.
• Coordinate with architect and other disciplines; convey design requirements clearly.
• Attend meetings with owners/clients/architects; document decisions and actions.
• Coordinate with authorities and utilities to meet codes and regulations.
• Assist with discipline man-hour budgets and schedule planning.
• Perform load calculations and equipment selection; review for technical accuracy.
• Respond to contractor questions during bid/construction; review submittals.
• Conduct site visits to monitor progress and observe installation.
• Maintain records of communications and contribute to lessons learned.
• Support training and mentoring of designers and EITs; pursue ongoing education.

What You’ll Do

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll apply standard design engineering techniques on small projects or selected segments of larger work - supporting analyses, drawings, coordination, and client communication while developing toward responsible charge under the guidance of senior engineers.

• Begin assuming responsible charge for portions of project designs under the supervision of the EOR and within your control and expertise.
• Develop design approaches and concepts with conceptual input/oversight from the EOR; perform engineering studies and analyses using industry software.
• Oversee preparation of drawings and documentation; ensure accuracy, neatness, and adherence to standards; review colleague work and provide feedback.
• Coordinate equipment and overall design space requirements with the architect and other disciplines; communicate design requirements clearly.
• Attend internal kickoff/design meetings and meetings with owners/clients/architects as needed; document decisions and action items.
• Coordinate with authorities, utilities, and municipalities to incorporate construction, code, and government requirements.
• Assist with discipline man-hour budgets; plan work to schedule and report progress, risks, and needed changes to the project manager.
• Perform studies, load calculations, and equipment selection appropriate to the project design; review work for technical accuracy before QA/QC.
• Respond to contractor and supplier questions during bid and construction; review shop drawings and submittals.
• Conduct site visits to monitor progress and observe installed construction; comment based on design specifications, owner expectations, and codes.
• Maintain detailed records of communications with clients, contractors, vendors, and team members; contribute to lessons learned.
• Support training and mentoring of designers and EITs; maintain continuous learning on codes, software, and industry trends; assist PMs as needed.

Minimum Requirements

Who We’re Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college with four years applicable experience in discipline design and analysis
• Registered Professional Engineer

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Knowledge of engineering theories and methodologies; ability to perform studies, load calculations, and equipment selection.
• Proficiency with industry software (Revit, AutoCAD) and discipline-specific tools (e.g., Trace700, SKM).
• Knowledge of drafting/design procedures, standards, and specifications; knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
• Strong technical writing and written communication; clear speech clarity; strong comprehension and follow-through.
• Detail-oriented with sound judgment and decision-making; effective interpersonal skills and ability to mentor designers/EITs.
