Job summary

Helion is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to support equipment installation, commissioning, and plant readiness at a new steel facility in Apple Grove, West Virginia. This hands-on role requires trouble shooting mechanical equipment, coordinating contractors, and moving projects from design through installation and startup.

You will work with rotating equipment, mechanical drives, and alignment, review drawings, verify installations, and track punch-lists to ensure on-time startup and full plant

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
• Experience in heavy manufacturing, industrial construction, or capital projects.
• Experience taking projects through installation and commissioning.
• Knowledge of rotating equipment, mechanical drives, and alignment.
• Strong contractor coordination and troubleshooting skills.
• Self-starter who identifies problems, takes ownership, and follows through.

Responsibilities

• Manage mechanical projects from scope development to installation oversight.

This is a hands-on role for an engineer who can troubleshoot mechanical equipment, coordinate contractors, and move projects from design through installation and startup.

What you’ll do

• Manage mechanical projects, including scope development, equipment specifications, scheduling, and installation oversight.
• Support commissioning and troubleshoot equipment issues alongside engineering and maintenance teams.
• Work with gearboxes, couplings, shaft alignment, power transmission, and other industrial mechanical systems.
• Coordinate contractors and vendors to resolve field issues and keep work moving.
• Review drawings, verify installations, and track punch-list items through completion.
• Support facility systems and coordinate with electrical, civil, and operations teams.

Typical day

Start with the team’s priorities, walk active projects, and check installation progress. Work directly with contractors and maintenance personnel to resolve equipment or construction issues, then follow up on drawings, materials, schedules, and outstanding commissioning items.

What we’re looking for

• Mechanical engineering background with experience in heavy manufacturing, industrial construction, or capital projects.
• Experience taking projects through installation and commissioning.
• Working knowledge of rotating equipment, mechanical drives, and equipment alignment.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and make minor CAD updates.
• Strong contractor coordination and practical troubleshooting skills.

Preferred experience

Steel, aluminum, paper, power generation, or similar industrial environments. Experience with cranes, HVAC systems, or greenfield plant startup is a plus.
