Job summary

ECS seeks a Mechanical Engineer in Chantilly, VA to apply fundamentals to design, analysis, and integration of electromechanical assemblies for imaging radars and range safety systems.

You will create 3D models and 2D drawings, maintain BOMs, support manufacturing, and ensure conformance to ASME standards while collaborating with Sr. ME and suppliers.

The role requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering, 2–4 years of experience, and the ability to obtain a DoD clearance if requested.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, and update designs for electronic and mechanical systems focusing on reliability, manufacturability, maintainability, service life, and serviceability.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards across the mechanical group and company products.
  • Produce complete 3D models and detailed 2D drawings per ASME standards and proper file management.
  • Research and recommend commercial components to fulfill design intent, performance and cost objectives.
  • Utilize MRP to define parts, assemblies, and their interrelationships for manufacturing.
  • Support manufacturing by gathering feedback to improve manufacturability and quality.
  • Collaborate with Sr. ME, production staff, and stakeholders to feedback on status of mechanical efforts.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure sub-contracted designs meet requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews to ensure conformance to specifications and ECS standards.

Job Description

ECS is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to work Chantilly, VA. ECS is looking to hire a Mechanical Engineer who can apply a working knowledge of engineering fundamentals to the group’s engineering and design activities under the guidance of a Sr. Mechanical Engineer and project staff. The position involves conceptualization of electromechanical assemblies to meet defined performance requirements, detailed design, creation of engineering technical data packages, production support and configuration control of complex electronic and mechanical systems. The primary end products include imaging radars and range safety systems.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Create, maintain, and update designs for electronic and mechanical systems, sub-assemblies, and components with a focus on reliability, manufacturability, maintainability, service life, and serviceability.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining engineering standards for mechanical engineering group and company products overall. Provide mechanical engineering expertise across all company products.
  • Produce complete 3D models and detailed 2D drawings in compliance with ECS Federal and ASME standards, including appropriate use of file management software and related design practices.
  • Research and recommend commercial components as necessary that when included will fulfill the design intent, performance and cost objectives.
  • Utilize ECS' Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system to define parts, assemblies, and their interrelationships for purposes of manufacturing.
  • Support manufacturing floor activities by gathering feedback from production staff regarding design deficiencies and to implement improvements to enhance product manufacturability and quality.
  • Regularly works with the Senior ME and other engineers, production personnel, and other company stakeholders to solicit input or provide feedback on status, related to mechanical engineering efforts.
  • Collaborate with engineering service providers, part suppliers, or subcontractors as required, to assure that sub-contracted designs and procured mechanical parts meet ECS Federal and contract requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and ad-hoc design meetings to ensure that designs conform to functional specifications, customer requirements, ECS standards, and best engineering practices.
Required Skills
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2 - 4 years professional experience
  • Working knowledge of ASME standard design practices using 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design software tools (preferably using Autodesk products), dimensioning and tolerancing techniques, and design-for-manufacturing principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate and interpret 2D engineering drawings of manufactured goods and apply knowledge of manufacturing processes
  • Experience creating and maintaining Bill of Materials
  • Experience with standard Microsoft Office suite products (Word, Excel, PPT)
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills and a demonstrated capability for analysis and strategic thinking to identify solutions
  • Strong initiative—the willingness and ability to succeed in a collaborative, team-based environment
  • Ability to multi-task with multiple projects in order to meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible way, both verbally and in writing.
  • Permanent US Residency / Citizenship Status Required per contract
  • A US DoD security clearance is not required but may be requested later on once hired. The candidate must be willing to submit for a DoD SECRET Clearance if requested.
Desired Skills
  • 4+ years of professional experience in an engineering field related to Mechanical Design.
  • Experience with configuration and lifecycle management of CAD data using PDM (Product Data Management) software.
  • Expertise at developing multi-level product structures.
  • Good working knowledge of various plastics, metals, and other materials, their properties, and applicability to achieving mechanical design objectives.
  • Proficient with common manufacturing and fabrication methodologies (e.g., various types of machining, welding, sheet metal forming, etc.) and the capabilities/limitations of those processes for producing forms and shapes and with varying degrees of precision and repeatability.
  • Excellent working knowledge of component tolerance and especially geometric dimensioning and tolerance, so that multi-part assemblies always fulfill the design intent when those individual components have been manufactured in compliance with the detail drawings.
  • Ability to design microelectronic subassemblies and electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with design and packaging techniques for survivability in harsh environments.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) techniques for analyzing thermal and mechanical stress, dynamic/kinematic interactions, and finite element analysis.
