Mechanical Engineer II, Spaceflight Bioinstrumentation
Los Angeles, CA (On-site, 5 days/week) · Full-time · $140K–$160K + equity
Loud Solutions is partnering with a venture‑backed space infrastructure startup to find a hands‑on Mechanical Engineer II to join their founding engineering team.
About our client
Our client builds autonomous labs and bioinstrumentation that fly on satellites and space stations. Their hardware lets researchers grow, observe and manufacture biological systems in microgravity, which speeds up drug discovery and makes biomanufacturing possible that can’t be done on Earth. The founders have spaceflight experience from leading space agencies, aerospace companies and national labs, and the company is still small, so this is a chance to join early in a brand‑new industry.
The role
You’ll be one of the first mechanical engineers on a small, scrappy team, owning hardware from early concepts and prototypes through flight. This is a hands‑on role: you’ll design hardware and also build, test, break and improve it yourself. You’ll think at the systems level, weighing mass, thermal, integration and cross‑disciplinary constraints, and you’ll help shape the company’s mechanical engineering and fabrication processes as it grows.
What you’ll do
- Design and develop mechanical hardware for spaceflight bioinstrumentation, including electromechanical and microfluidic systems
- Build and iterate quickly with rapid prototyping (FDM, SLA, laser cutting, CNC machining)
- Weigh design tradeoffs across mass, thermal, structural and integration constraints
- Produce CAD models, engineering drawings and documentation for fabrication and manufacturing
- Lead DFM reviews with manufacturing partners and take designs into production
- Support assembly, integration and test (AIT) of full flight systems
What they’re looking for
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience with a track record of hardware you built, tested and iterated on yourself
- Experience with complex, multidisciplinary systems, ideally spaceflight hardware, payloads, robotics, or scientific, diagnostic or bioinstrumentation devices
- Hands‑on prototyping and fabrication skills, comfortable in the shop as well as in CAD
- Experience at a startup or small team where you owned projects end to endFamiliarity with polymers and composites
- Experience moving designs from prototype into manufacturing
Nice to have
- Flight hardware or AIT experience
- Microfluidics, fluid handling or life‑science instrumentation experience
Details
- Base salary of $140K–$160K plus competitive equity
