Job summary

The Boring Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to drive the development of our autonomous Prufrock boring machine, a 310-foot, 800,000-pound marvel with 10,000+ components. You will apply CAD, FEA, and hand calculations to refine designs and reduce surface disruption.

You’ll design systems for boring machine parts, support equipment, and tunnel infrastructure, collaborating with other disciplines and traveling to job sites to commission new designs and troubleshoot existing ones.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 1+ years of design, build and testing experience.
• Proficiency using SolidWorks.
• Experience creating manufacturing drawings.
• Hands-on hardware fabrication/assembly/testing.

Responsibilities

• Design systems and sub-systems related to boring machine parts and tunnel infrastructure.
• Use FEA and CAD to develop designs.
• Meet project schedules from conception to implementation.
• Communicate schedule changes to stakeholders.

Job description

The Boring Company is revolutionizing urban transportation by building an underground network of tunnels to eliminate soul-crushing traffic.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll drive the development of our autonomous Prufrock machine—a 310-foot, 800,000-pound marvel with over 10,000 components, capable of drilling tunnels 10x faster than traditional methods using Zero-People-in-Tunnel (ZPIT) technology. Your expertise will help refine innovative techniques like “porpoising” to minimize surface disruption, reduce costs by a factor of 10 or more, and enable scalable infrastructure for projects like the Music City Loop and Vegas Loop.

Responsibilities

• Design various systems and sub-systems related to operations such as boring machine parts, support systems, support system equipment, passenger/construction vehicles, and tunnel infrastructure.
• Employ competent use of judgment, hand calculations, FEA and CAD to develop and communicate designs.
• Adhere to the project schedule and ensure timely completion from conception to implementation.
• Communicate schedule to stakeholders and others with dependent systems, bringing attention to changes in schedule as they happen.
• Constantly evaluate how the system fits into the larger picture of a working operation. Ensure that design choices are in line with the top level needs with ample consideration of future developments.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 1+ years of experience in design, build and testing.
• Proficiency using SolidWorks.
• Basic proficiency in machine design.
• Experience in creating manufacturing drawings.
• Hands-on hardware experience performing fabrication, assembly and/or testing - can be in a professional, academic or recreational setting.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Knowledgeable in mechatronics, mechanism design, fluid power system concepts and design, dynamics, material selection, testing methods, and common machining and fabrication processes.
• Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.

Additional Requirements

• Willing to travel to job sites as required to commission & develop new designs, as well as troubleshoot and problem solve existing designs.
• Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary.
